Drivers just too damned quick to beep horns at cyclists

I have a theory;
As soon as anyone takes up Road cycling and they get into the Lycra thing, it's like superman They suddenly morph into this holier than thou super hero status and are invincible
Just a random thought....and I seem to be having more random thoughts as I get older!Share The Road Event http://www.sharetheroadride.co.uk

Critch - like it - only worry is, I live in deepest Somerset and am not sure if 'blowing a kiss' would be such a good idea - might be misconstrued and backfire badly around here!! must sign off, imagination beginning to.........0

I think drivers don't like cyclists because they see us on bikes and get all jealous at the fact that we are doing something physically demanding that they themselves can no longer do. Then they use road tax as an excuse, basically because they have to come up with something.
Isn't this a big part of it?
I do the same myself when I am cycling, see some "pro" looking guy in lycra up ahead, I have to catch him up.
Most times these guys, not even knowing I am behind them, just stand up and power up a hill and away, no chance of me catching them.
Everyone has like a built in "competitiveness" like that I think, but with drivers they are past cycling, they are has beens or whatever, they smoke, drink lager every night, eat kebabs, never exercise... and end up bitter with no energy and depressed, wondering why.
The answer to cars beeping is get a car horn on your bike. As they overtake, you can beep back at them every bit as loud. Let me know when they invent one light enough to justify carrying it. Maybe it could work off a rechargeable PP3 or something, I have no clue what power it takes to "run" a car horn, but it would be hilarious to be able to beep (loudly) back at them.
I hear your car horn and I raise you...

Worst thing is now there's a car driver who probably now thinks all cyclists are dicks!0

It does, that is true. But do roadies really feel the need to complain publically when someone beeps at them, overtakes them closely, or whatever else the conflict may be. Mtbers could complain about just as many things on the trail which cause problems, but you rarely see threads about it.
Do they not still whine about ramblers?
Thing is, most who ride a road bike, also ride mtb too, and also drive!0 -

I don't think it's about doing something physical but more about getting places quicker. I also ride a motorcycle and some drivers appear to get really angry that you're getting to where you want to go quicker than they are. You can sometimes see them clocking you in their rear view mirror and moving their car to block your progress when filtering. May be a cliche, but it always seems to BMW drivers who do this!0 -
Got a light beep from a big people carrier going down a fast section with double white lines today. Guy was obviously saying I'm here, I'm going to overtake and you might not be aware of my presence and stray into the middle of the road. Was a nice gesture and got a cheery wave from me...0

Jeez, is Raffles still intent on proving that he's a mook ?
:roll:Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.
Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved0 -
Raffles......do you feel the love?
For what it's worth. You're misguided about car drivers. They don't even like each other! It's not about disliking cyclists. I ride a motorbike and they hate me. My daughter's just passed her test and has a green badge and they hate her and hated her even more when she had 'L' plates. They hate buses. They hate HGV's. They hate caravans.
They've spent and continue to spend a lot of money which gives them the right to hate us all
Not all drivers are like this but there's plenty enough!0 -
No, you've got it all wrong, what they really hate, is when there are two lanes of stationary traffic on our local dual carriageway and I ride down the middle. Gives you a lovely warm feeling, or is it the negative waves burning into my back? sadly I would feel the same way if the roles were reversed.0

These threads are a perfect example of what happens when Golfers take up cycling. 19th tee anyone?0
