Completely agree some of the kit worn during the kona ironman was crazy!

To be fair - a lot of MAMILs would have fallen off too.

Calf guards should be banned though - I agree.
  • haha!
  • 31% gradient on a surface like that?! I do have some sympathy! What I don't have sympathy for is their stupid outfits and the way that most of them just flop over, whilst still clipped in! Simpletons.

Perhaps they just found the vid amusing without declaring any particular level of cycling prowess?

^ hey bud, some of us were doing triathlon when it started, it was fun, nobody took it too seriously apart from a few guys who were winning the races. Then the 'money' guys moved-in, entry fees went skyward and people started taking themselves too seriously....so in effect they've set themselves up for this.

It's lucky cycling isn't the same

Bollox. Used to live in Eastbourne. If you are ever that way, go up Butts lane or the 'High and Over' from Alfriston to Seaford or Beachy Head on the Main Road to East Dean - would make some of these climbs look like pimples (and I only ever got off once up Butts lane due to a stinker of a hangover).
The problem with Tri-Athletes is that they don't posses a lot of technique other than rolling gears for TT's. I have a friend who does Tri's and there's no way I could match him in a 25m TT or keep up with him on the flat for any length of time, but if we are out together, I leave him for dead on the hills.

Whats funny about that clip is the value of all those expensive rigs hitting the deck so frequently and the obvious lack of consideration in gearing for the climb. After all, if you are standing on the pedals but the bike ain't moving, you are either too fat or in too higher gear or both.

It's more the inability to unclip that gets me....

With respect, I don't think there's anything quite like Baldwin Street (the one in the vid) in the Sussex area. It's 35% at its maximum gradient.

It reminds me of Hardknott Pass during the Fred Whitton challenge.

    Just for perspective.

I doubt it. Other than Harknott Pass there's nothing as steep as that (31%) and few close to it in the country:

    •Nick O Pendle – 16% (Lancashire)
    •Burrington Combe – 8% (Mendips)
    •Westclose Hill – 16% (Mendips
    •Shap Fell - 4% (Lake District)
    •Dovers Hill – 12% (Gloucestershire)
    •Long Hill Climb 3% – (Buxton)
    •Ripponden Bank – 16% (Lancashire)
    •Rake Hill Climb – 22% (Lancashire)
    •Kirkstone Pass – 25% (Lake District)
    •Catford Hill Climb - 25% – Surrey
    •Wrynose Pass – 25% (Lake District)
•Harknott Pass – 33% (Lake District) the Climb of Hardknott pass from West to east is the hardest in the UK in my opinion because of length and steepness
    •Fleet Moss – 20% (Yorkshire)
    •Buttertubs – 20% (Yorkshire)

Also, do the climb during a TT effort and don't recover at the top. And I've seen plenty of 'roadies' walking up much lesser hills, even those with % in the teens. As a country we're generally pretty lame at hills, it's not just the triathletes

    Been out of England much?

There’s plenty of leg destroyers in Scotland and one of the 11/10’s in Greatest Cycling Climbs is up here. We’ve got a morale breaker on our doorstep that’s on a par with quite a few on your list:

I think it's just a bit of banter.... Got to admit there all pretty useless..... Yes 31% on a surface like that would be tough BUT to loose total control and fall over is pretty pathetic....

I think it also depends on where in the race this is situated, if its at the end then tiredness will play a large part, but still pahahahahahahahana I was cracking up watching this
