Not necessarily your favourite song line, but what song lines make you stop and think? For me, tonight anyway, it's "if fate should break my stride" from 1952 Vincent Black Lightning by Richard Thompson.

    Super Furry Animals

Spent some times in stormy weather
    Under clouds of my dilemma
Now there's nothing much to do
But sit and rot in front of televisions
    Staring back at me
I'm just waiting for the microwaves
To wash me into the sea

You know they don't give a f**k about anybody else (X4)
    You know they

    Out of focus ideology
    Keep the masses from majority
    Experts, brain washed, tumble dried
Left to bleed whilst vultures glide

You know they don't give a f**k about anybody else (X8)
    You know they

You know they don't give a f**k about anybody else (X36)

Just after my wife got diagnosed with Cancer - Zoom Fat Larry's Band :(

Zoom, just one look and then my heart went boom
Suddenly and we were on the moon
Flying high on the neon sky, oh

    Bang, just one touch and
    All the church bells rang
Heaven called and all the angel sang
Sunrise shine in the morning sky, oh

Zoom, you chase the day away
    High noon, the moon
And stars came out to play
Then my whole wide world went zoom
(I passed the rainbow as it went flying by
Faster and faster we were higher than high)
For once in my lifetime I was finally free
And you came back to me

Oh, zoom you chase the day away High noon
The moon and stars came out to play
Then my whole world went zoom

    Moonbeams dancing in the afternoon
Shadows blowing as the roses bloom
Looking down on a wonderland, oh

Smack, just one kiss and I was outta whack
All at once there was no turnin' back
Oh so far above the brightest star, oh

Just after my dear dog died, The Noisettes - I'll never forget you!

Verve: Bitter sweet symphony "I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah"

What other reason is there for listening to music especially after some good whiskey and melancholy :?:

Pink Floyd Wish you were here

"And did they get you to trade
    Your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage? "

Quite eloquently describes the reason I resigned from the prison service when I could tell their lies no more!!!!
  • Radiohead 'like Spinning Plates'. Profound & thought provoking, the lyrics hit home for me on many levels. These lyrics can mean whatever you want them to really. Along with the incredible arrangement of the music & Thom Yorkes incredible vocal talent, this tune is incredible, & the lyrics will live with me.

    "Like Spinning Plates"

    While you make pretty speeches,
    I'm being cut to shreds
You feed me to the lions,
    a delicate balance

And this just feels like spinning plates
I'm living in cloud cuckoo land
And this just feels like spinning plates
My body is floating down the muddy river

Only just heard about that shooting in the states. This song was in my head today and now it seems to fit the situation :-(
For what's the use in pressing palm
When children fade in mother's arms
It's a cruel world we've so much to lose
And what we have to learn we rarely choose
  • 'But they say that you sleep just a wink or two
And every new day is a turn of the screw
Cause when you've got everything nothing will do
Oh you got what you wanted all right'

-- Richard Thompson, You Got What You Wanted

And one that made me laugh:

'When you're done with all that dancing around
    You'd make a lovely mother
    Kids are such a pleasure
    Just ask your brother'

-- Richard Thompson, Dear Janet Jackson

'The Mississippi delta was shining like a National guitar' - Graceland for me is possibly the best opening line of any song ever, just makes me want to go and see if it does.

  • Simon and Garfunkel, The sun is burning in the sky

Strands of clouds go slowly drifting by
In the park the lazy bees
Are joining in the flowers, among the trees
And the sun burns in the sky

Now the sun is in the West
Little kids go home to take their rest
And the couples in the park
Are holdin' hands and waitin' for the dark
And the sun is in the West

Now the sun is sinking low
Children playin' know it's time to go
    High above a spot appears
A little blossom blooms and then draws near
And the sun is sinking low

Now the sun has come to Earth
Shrouded in a mushroom cloud of death
Death comes in a blinding flash
Of hellish heat and leaves a smear of ash
And the sun has come to Earth

    Now the sun has disappeared
All is darkness, anger, pain and fear
    Twisted, sightless wrecks of men
Go groping on their knees and cry in pain
And the sun has disappearedThe Sun is Burning...

As a young teenager, those last two verses really got me. It is a beautifully sung song, then it turns from a picture of paradise to a picture of hell...in a verse.

From Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill.

    'And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places'

Just love the lyrics of the whole song tbh.

Some lyrics from the final posthumous queen album made in heaven, particularly mother love, written by Freddie mercury just before his death................I'm a man of the world, they say that I'm strong.......but my heart is heavy, and my hope is gone.......
  • The Beatles - In My Life

    There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
    Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all
