How did this happen?

I went for my normal night time training and this happened.

Luckily it was a few hundred yards after leaving home.

Please advise.

Bike was bought in May 2012 and I bought it off a guy on ebay last week. So in theory its still under warrenty.

    You might struggle with warranty as the second owner.

    It's hard to tell, out of focus picture, but looks like the frame is ok and the mech hanger has snapped. They are designed to snap in order to protect the frame in a knock, as far as I'm aware.

    If its a popular frame it should be an easy replacement.

    you caught something. or knocked the bike some how and the mech hanger did what is should do. get a new one.

    If it was at the start of the ride maybe it's been knocked in the house/shed/garage? You set off, it's substantially weaker....first powerful stroke you put in it goes...

    That would be my guess.

    Just consider it luck that it went early on. Shouldn't be too much for a new hanger and jockey wheel.

    Thanks guys. It was actually serviced on saturday so its been sitting in the hallway. I went for a 20 mile ride last night, wiped it down and left it standing. No different to the start as it is on a middle/low gear as you would expect and ease into a ride. I wouldnt have put a powerful stroke with a low gear.

    But I guess bit of bad luck. Will call up Evans or Specialized tomorrow as the bike was purchased in May this year.

    A replacement mech hanger won't cost much. You won't get it done under warranty. Even if you were the original owner you wouldn't get it under warranty. You're lucky that you didn't cause any other damage - if the mech had ended up in the wheel it could have been expensive.
    More problems but still living....

    Looks like a fracture failure - can you follow the failure "crack" for the initiation site - could be a dent or scratch.

    Cold weather could have made the alu hanger more susceptible to brittle failure.
    All the gear, but no idea...

    Thanks all for the comments. I will ask what they can do. Its a shame and for the cold to affect it like that surely you would need a massive drop in tempreture to cause this. I did cycle the night before and given it was maybe 1-2 degree less tonight I wouldnt expect a 2012 bike to have something like this happen.

    I have a rockhopper pro which is over 20 years and its still in great shape. So its not that I mishandle my bikes.

    I also have a Cinelli Mash fixie which I used on the odd occasion too.

    Such a shame for this to happen.

    Or possibly damaged in transit? How well was it packaged (assuming it was delivered by a courier/parcel firm)?

    Reckon Gozzy may be right. Have a look at the side of the rear mech and/or the right hand shift lever for signs of scratches that may point to the previous owner 'having an off'.

    Like other posters have said, just get a new mech hanger.

    Mech hangers are considered consumables so won't be covered under warranty... As said elsewhere, just replace it.

    Thanks. I actually drove to Milton Keynes to pick it up. It was late at night, but we did test the bike and it cycled well. I then took it to the LBS a day later to get the gearing checked and had to replace the cassette, chain and full service for under £100.

    This was fine and I cycled twice at night the following week and last night would have been my third night ride.

    It seems that the hanger has twisted as well so perhaps I need to change the rear part?

    Really confused how it happen, but there is no stress marks on the area. I had a puncture on the rear wheel so I changed the tube and replaced the rear wheel. double checked if the wheel was on properly etc just a bit of bad luck I guess.

    Hope to get it replaced later today and go for a cycle.

    Who knows... I did a stationary getting used to cleats kind of a fall and the next time I pedalled the mech hanger went. It's designed to fail so I guess it's doing its job

    I reckon the previous owner probably bent it, possibly tried to straighten it themselves and then it failed on you :(.

    Would recommend carefully checking the rest of the bike for any signs of crash damage. The LBS should have done this, but there aren't that many out there who are that conscientious.

    You should be able to pick up a replacement hanger and a jockey wheel for the rear mech. While you are ordering, would recommend getting an extra spare hanger as well - they are some of the most bike-specific parts and you don't want to be caught out again right?

    As nasty as it looks it is doing what its designed to do. Rather that cheap bit fail than take the whole frame with it !

    It may well have been out of alignment(bent) and was straightened with the right tool but as with most metal parts that get bent and straightened it has fatigued and given way.

    As one of the jockey wheel teeth has sheared off, either that happened at the same time or it was already missing.

    Maybe something like a twig caught in the cage, jammed the chain which yanked off the hanger and sheared off the tooth in the process?

    If the tooth was already missing - that may be the cause of the jam?
