After a wipe out on some black ice on saturday i am in need of a new helmet after mine died a death !

Whilst id love something cool and exotic, i am on a budget and looking at absolute top end of £40 but ideally nearer to £30. Read a few reviews and googled all the ones highly reccomended but all way out of my price range sadly.

Any suggestions on anything i should consider or any bargains been spotted ?

Planet x have a fair few by power race and MET for half price at the moment, last helmet was a MET fortissimo which i liked but just fancy something different and cant find any reviews or info on power race helmets.

Any help much appreciated

Specialized Echelon, £37 from Cycle Surgery:

  • It still astounds me that people cycle without a helmet on. Hope you're alright!

If you're looking for something different, BBB have started doing helmets - I have their overshoes and they're fab quality for the price, so hopefully they've carried this ethic on to their other kit. Saw a BBB helmet here with 10% off: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=62125

If you are buying online either stick to what you know fits or find somewhere local to try out. If the Met was comfortable and fitted you well then not getting another Met because you fancy something different is quite likely to be a bad move.

  • +1 for the Spesh Echelon, my previous lid was an Echelon, for the money it's great value, fairly lightweight and really comfortable to wear!

I've moved on to the next one up now, can't remember the model name, but my LBS were doing a good deal on it at the time so thought I'd treat myself!!

Giro Savant is a great helmet, very light, looks great and fairly neat/compact.

Gets good reviews (4 star on bikeradar).

Available for £38 online a quick google search reveals.

Perhaps it's something to do with the fact that the OP would presumably have left bits of his head on the road rather than bits of helmet had he not been wearing one.

Evans were chopping these out for £45 on saturday, 25% off. I missed them in my local branch :(
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • I have a Giro Indicator. They were £40 in Halfords, mine was £23 on Amazon. Seem to be even cheaper now.
    Is the gorilla tired yet?

Spot on Lotus49. They're inexpensive and save lives...no brainer.

Guess I'm more astounded people go out cycling when its obviously icy. Commuters excepted.

Gotta try before you buy with helmets. As someone else said, only buy online if you've tried the helmet on somewhere so you know it fits your head shape.
    More problems but still living....

Tried a few on today whilst out christmas shopping, tried the giro savant and giro atmos (way out of my price range but very nice), also tried the met forte and met estro.

I liked the savant and a should be able to get it online around £40, and also liked the met estro and planet x have it for sale at £45. Both seem nice helmets and fit was good, decisions decisions

Maybe it wasn't obviously icy.....

And no it wasnt icy, and yes i was commuting and 12 miles into my commute with less than 100m to my destination and i was freewheeling about to jump off the bike when i hit a patch of black ice and bike just went from under me.

A very unspectacular slow speed wipe out but still left me with a black eye, road rash up my face, shoulder, hip and ankle all badly bruised and painful and my met fortissimo helmet literally cracked in half, without it i would have been knocked out cold and probably worse and even now after 5 days the righht hand side of my head is still numb.

Have you seen a doc? Numb-head is not to be triffled with.

I like Met helmets. The flexible band fitting shapes itself to your skull, so even if your skull has changed shape, it will fit. The last one I saw on sale at 1/2 price, I bought 2.

I have a Giro Indicator. They were £40 in Halfords, mine was £23 on Amazon. Seem to be even cheaper now.

I have one of these too, but I get funny looks from other roadies because of the visor on the front

Helps keep the rain and low sun out of your eyes though!

    Really?!

I have a Giro Havoc with a visor. Normally I don't use the visor unless I know I'll be riding into low sunlight but I've certainly never got a funny look for it (though how I'd know that my funny look was for the visor rather than something else I have no idea!).
