Wind shield for ears?

Hey, guys...

I was wondering if you guys have ever purchased shields for your ears to stop the wind noise for a clearer sound on the road? now that it's winter, it would be good to stop the wind hitting the ears as well.

I have a little skull-cap thing that covers my ears. It does reduce wind noise massively for me, allowing me to hear traffic a bit easier when at speed. Pretty sure you can get headband type ones that just cover the forehead and ears too.

    Do it! Buy stuff!

Don't all of these make it harder to hear traffic noise? I've got one of those scull caps, and whilst it does keep my ears nice and warm, I have to push it above my ears if I want to have a conversation. My TT helmet is the same (not that I'd wear if for commuting); lots of wind noise, but everything else is muted.

Just wear a cap that covers the ears. Why do you need 'clearer sound?' I use a cap and earphones and can still hear what's going on around me. Although frequent shoulder checks are far more useful than relying on your ears anyway.

At low speed, sure, but not to any concerning degree.

The difference i find is when at speed out in the open, without the roar of the wind in my sticky-out-ears i can hear cars coming before i can see them. Which is nice.
  • Look Mum No Hands winter hat is excellent and only £20 and covers your ears. Also a decent peak. Since it's got chilly it's that and a pavement side in ear headphone.

    This ^^

I have a few of them, I can 'buff up' when required around the neck, face and head/ears - very useful bit of kit.

I find very few lycra caps come down far enough to cover my ears properly - due to the one-size-fits-all and my big noggin that they dont fit well enough. The Headbands are my best solution, but make sure they are reasonably tight otherwise the wind and general creep can have them move up or air whip underneath. I have one from Aldi that I really like which says it cant be washed and I havent tried yet but I have bought another from Decathlon that can be washed and is almost as good. The Endura one I have is not a wide enough band and not tight enough.

I love my buffs, but again find them too tight to comfortably pull up over my head to cover my ears.

If you wear glasses, it gets even more complicated though. I find that I always wear a pair of yellow tint glasses now, to stop things going in my eyes and keep the cold wind out of them. But the sides dont always fit well under a headband - I have one pair which is fine but the other pair lifts the band away from the ears, makes it ride up and renders it pointless.

I have seen a skull cap somewhere that had little slits just in front/above the ear to pass your glasses through - which I have been trying to find in a shop to have a look at but I cant. I also cant find where I saw them on the web now...

    Ditto.

I tend to double mine up a couple of times to achieve a headband-like effect.

Keeps the wind off the forehead and ears, and the hair under control, while not giving me a sweaty head.

I ride with glasses over the top of the band/hat. They don't go anywhere. Worth a go?
