I've been lurking on here for a while now but this is my first time posting.

I used to ride a lot 10+ years ago but have only been on and off over the last few years. I've decided since giving up various car related projects I needed something to keep me busy. I've always wanted to build my own bike so now seemed like the perfect time.

I currently ride a 2010 Norco Wolverine. I fancied building a full suspension bike as a bit of a project and to teach myself how its done.

This is the base of my project :

I've also just bought a bike work stand and plan to pick up the specialist tools as I go.

I've just won a SRAM X7/X5 group set on ebay and i'll be getting started as soon as I gather some more bits and pieces.

Thanks for looking. Any advice for a newbie builder will be gratefully received.

  • Building is great! Really satisfying. Get a basic toolkit and work up from there. You can get decent starter sets for about £40. Get some decent teflon grease too! Google is your friend! Youtube is a great resource for lots of tips and tutorial you need and its always nice to see it being done! Parktools site is excellent too! Second hand is a good way to go and when buying from bike forums always try and check the user for their previous sales and to see if there is any negative feedback. 90+% of people are honest and genuine though.

Superstar Components and Exotic are great cheap sites for finishing kit, wheels and bits and bobs. The German sites are marvellous for tyres, bottom brackets and such too.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the advice.

My tool kit is pretty substantial anyway so i was hoping i'd only have to get the odd bits and pieces specific to bike mechanics.

I've been glued to Youtube tutorials and walk throughs on various sites. I've gone from not having a clue to anting to get stuck in ASAP!

I won a SRAM X7/X5 groupset on ebay last night so I'm looking forward to that turning up. First things first I need to order a bottom bracket and headset. I'm not too sure about what headset to order though as its a tapered head tube (1 1/8 to 1.5). That might be a job for the LBS.
