Front shifter just went bang

Hi
Ive just had my Superlight frame built up from bits off my old hardrock got the gears all set up as part of it, and Ive just been riding up and down the street sorting the sag out and tried to shift the front ring from middle to big, and the bloody shifter has just fallen apart! Is this just something that happens from time to time? Its a crappy Sram X3 but could something the mechanic has done cause this?
Basically what I'm asking is, should I be calling the shop and ask them to replace it?

Seems an OK price0 -
I'd replace it. If the internals have gone, it has had it. But hard to tell without opening it up.0

the unit itself has fallen apart, snapped plastic and so its not connected to the bike anymore its dangling. Those x3 ones above at CRC will do a job for wont they?0

What rear derailer do you have?0

SRAM X-4, mid cage as standard on the old bike, tempted to replace front derailleur as well its a Shimano Altus and the front shifts have been dodgy a while. Is there any particular front derailleur I should be looking at? Want to do it all on a budget if I can, bit to close the Christmas to be throwing lots more money at the bike0

Will be fine.0

Cheers for the advice as ever, one final question though...will a Shimano Deore Front Derailleur Top Swing M510 work in my set up?

A Deore won't shift any better than an Altus, it will just be a bit lighter.....front shifting is always a bit clunky, whetever level of kit you are using.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Shifter shimano or SRAM will work, depends if frame requires high or low clamp.0

its a low clamp, but front derailleurs seem to say 3x10 or 3x9 ect ect, does it matter? Or can I just do a little upgrade get a 3x10 front shifter and start upgrading groupset bit by bit?0

I wouldn't - it will have a thinner gap and will rub more.I don't do smileys.
