Budget build challenge

Some of you may recall that we used to do challenges for full custom builds for certain budgets/types of bikes ie a couple of years ago we were speccing Recon equipped, 10 speed hardtails for less than £500.
How far can we get with a 29er? Better than what we can get an off the peg bike for? Any chance of a decent budget build? Any full builds, or links to good budget equipment will be appreciated.

Heres a good start I'd imagine

You could probably do a full build with some 2nd hand bits and some rigid forks. And Single Speed it!0 -

I think he should discount a 29er altogether then.0 -

What kind of specification? My opinion is that budget, sun tour equipped, heavy 29ers are pointless so recreating that holds no excitement. What about a decent fox/rs forked, 2x10 under 13 kg?0 -

Anything you want really: as before, a year or two back we were getting Rockshox equipped 10 speed bikes for less than £500, so would be interested if could do that. But multiple price points would be good. But nothing wrong with some Suntour forks, and a lot wrong with some Fox forks.
The exercise serves to see whether custom builds for 29ers can work out cheaper, and if after market parts are coming down in price.0 -

Completely forgot about a headset and seatpost clamp... so i guess building one yourself is nigh on the same as buying one off the peg, unless you really hunt for bargains. What We Achieve In Life, Echoes In Eternity0 -

An FSA orbit MX is £20 off ebay, a seat clamp is about a fiver. Still cheaper to build your own (you're still missing some other bits and pieces) and I reckon your build is better thant the On One build.0 -
There's no doubt that the Deore groupset is a absolute bargain. Hardly worth searching out cheaper stuff.0

Good mate of mine has just got a Saracen kili trail for £600, deore on most, acera shifters (oddly the whole kili range keeps them, even the pro!) front mech and brakes, but the rest looks good for the money,
www.saracen.co.uk/bikes/trail/kili-trail
he absolutely loves it which is kinda the point of a bike, lol.Timmo.

Have these on pretty much year round on 26 (Meta 55), but they just didn't work for me in 29er format (on Trek Cobia), too slow. On One Smorgsbord Enduro instead? http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/TYOOSM29X225/on_one_smorgasbord_29x225_tyre Takes it to £30 for tyres0 -

oh I used love the budget build threads from back in the day! Look forward to seeing what bargains we can these days.0

Still remember my own virtual £500 build...
For a 29er and with inflation I guess a £700 budget makes most sense!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
(Quite a) Bit over the £500 budget, but hard pressed to beat this for value:

Pretty sure On-One were doing their 29er (I forget which frame) rock shox sram X5 models for £599 for a limited time, but appear to be back at £799.0
