I have a buddy over form SoCal next week, and he can get the Hero 3 GoPro for £160, I was thinking about grabbing one to stick on the Road and MTB bike. MTB is pretty straight forward, but does anyone use one on their road bike?

Looking on Youtube (very sad I know) but there are some great POVs of descents etc.

  • I've literally just come off a phone call to my mate where we were discussing which one to buy! He’s a freelance cameraman who also does his own short films and documentaries and he’s got kit ranging from small HD cams to monster broadcast quality beasts. Anyway, we’re off to the Alps next year to ride and watch some Tour and we want to document it. For a pro like him the Black is the nuts but the Silver is a really nice cam and gets the nod. The White on the other hand is just a bit meh. There’s now an app out that lets you use your phone as a remote, so it kind of takes the edge off the wifi remote that comes with the Black. For quality of film the Black is unbeatable. All that slow-mo stuff on the ads is done with the Black in 720p @120fps mode. It also has a better data transfer rate. But if you’re not looking for balls out production then the Silver is a quality cam. Get an extra memory card and battery while you’re at it.
  • You can buy a cool K-Edge mount that sticks the cam right under your stem btw.
  • Same here, we are off to Les Gets in July to ride / watch the Tour.

According to the GoPro site the white and silver are virtually the same, bar the still capabilities. The only difference is the Silver (11Mb) has a capability of taking 10 shots per second and the White (5Mb) is 3 shots per second. The rest is the same, the Hero 3 White and Silver is actually exactly the same camera as the Hero 2. Its only the Black that is 4k.

  • The K-Edge brackets are ££££......especially when the Handlebar mount does handlebar AND seatpost for £20. Admitedlet the K-Edge lost way cooler !!

  • I have the GoPro app on my Ipad. It also lets you view what the camera is filming real time (or rather with a 3 second delay) so no more messed up set up shots. Especially snowboarding, it will be pretty good to click your iphone to ensure the helmet cam is pointing where you want it to.

You could have the rear-mounted camera and an iPhone on your bars for a nice rear-view camera!!!

the handle bar mount is terrible (the one made by go pro). don't buy it unless you want the camera constantly slipping or even just falling ogff the bike. if you want to mout the thing properly get the k-edge mounts, far better!

the white is underrated (but is not great in low light). i know its only 5mp but it shoots decent 1080p 30fps video and both 720p modes are great.

the black is a fantastic bit of kit. silver is also very good.

Thanks, thats good avice. Im grabbing the Silver. Although spending £90 on 2
K-Edge mounts is a little steep. I saw a front mount that attaches to the steerer tube bolt, or maybe even helmet mount.
  • Better off getting the GoPro Hero 3 black edition if not just get the hero2

Except for the 3 second delay.

The Sony HDR AS15 would work as that app is just about real time.

good, enjoy it. its a good bit of kit. the black and silver and the other things the guys reccomend here are all pretty good. its much of a muchness in this sector.
  • Since this thread has been bumped again - my girlfriend got me a GoPro 3 Silver for my Xmas so I'm well chuffed. Didn't even ask for one or expect one! A K-Edge mount was swiftly purchased and I picked up a 64Gb card too. My aforementioned cameraman mate and I took it out for ride last week and then checked the footage when we got back – seriously good quality and that was only at 720p!

I think that unless you’re going to do balls out video production you’re better off with the Silver.

Oh and it’s the size of a box of matches now.

Do people actually use these on a road bike as a helmet camera? They look a bit bulky (the way they stick out rather than the actual size) for helmet use compared to something like a Contour. The handlebar mounts look pretty good but then you lack that PoV footage.

I mount mine on the front bars using the k-edge or on the seat post. Kinda geeky but can be fun when you're in a big group and tonking it.
