  • Very cool. I'm actually in Thailand at the moment helping out at a dog rescue centre, and they were just saying the electricity bill is a lot. This could be very useful.

Nice idea, similar to the light tubes you can get for your house.

I think that the 55watts is a bit out though, it sounds very high. More likely the output is equivalent to a 55watt bulb (if there was such a thing).

Don't let the science of the chemical concoction fool you, the bleach in the water is only there to stop mold/algae growing in the water to keep the water clear for up to 5 years.

The water refracts the sun light so obviously only works in the daytime (best when sunny!).

It's a homemade/cheap version of the commercially available sun tube which refracts light through the thickness of perspex in a tube inserted through your roof, these work really well and are great in bathrooms/shower cubicles where you don't have many windows.

  • This was featured on the BBC website last year sometime. A brilliant and simple idea to solving a basic human survival need for light in the dark. I seem to remember the small business is providing an additional benefit of giving employment to some of the local people which was the reason this was on the BBC site.
