10 speed newbie needs advice

just wanting to know if you can run a shimano 10 speed cassette with a Sram 10 speed rear mech.....and which make chain would be best?

Any MTB 10 speed chain will work fine.

Would a short cage mech work ok or will I need a medium cage?

Depends on the range of the mech and the chainrings/cassette.
