My (non cycling) wife and I just returned from a short trip to watch a couple of days of the Ghent 6.

It was great fun and highly recommended. Ghent is very easy to get to via plane or train since it's only 20 mins from Brussels. It's a lovely city and merits a couple of days of exploring. And you can easily tack on another couple of days in Brussels, Antwerp or (as we did) Bruges. All are only 20-45 mins apart and once there easy to explore on foot.

The event itself was good too, booking was easy, we did it early and got great seats. My wife had never watched a cycling event before but by the second night she had got the hang of it and thoroughly enjoyed herself.

The meet takes place late November, when there is precious little else going on and if you take an extra suitcase you can do some early Xmas shopping and/or stock up on some the excellent Belgian Christmas beer ..

We will certainly go back.

  • We did flanders for the first time this year & went by car (have a company estate) and with four of us was a cheap and easy option on Eurostar. Cheap hotel booked in the city with parking and used our tickets for the tram & train system which was easy enough even for me to follow.

Plus on the way back filled up on beer, though did consider leaving 1 or 2 people behind to make room for more beer!
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

Now there's an idea. Not sure the wife will appreciate it though :)
