Upgrading Shifters on 2006 Trek 3700

I was looking at upgrading my brakes and shifters to SRAM X7 series on my old Trek 2006 3700 Mountain Bike. Although I am unsure as to how the compatability with different speeds of bikes are. I know my bike is only a 7-speed, but is there any way I can have a 9-speed trigger on there without causing problems? I would like to have nicer parts on my bike and maybe eventually transfer them over to a new bike I will be building. What is the best option. I have already ordered the Avid Single Digit Brakes and Speed Dial 7 levers.

You would very likely need a new rear wheel to fit a nine speed cassette - so would need to budget for that.0

So having the 9-Speed shifter on there isn't at all compatible with the 7-speed gears?0
-
No, the shifter has to match the cassette for speeds.0

You can use an 8 speed shifter with 7 gears as as they have the same gear spacing, you just set the rear mech up to not overshift.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Th spacing is still a little different - centre to centre spacing on Shimano cogs is 0.2mm smaller per cog on 8 speed than 9. It can usually be got to work ok though, though may be some clicking if optimised for one end.0

So does anything else have to match up to make the shifters compatible if I use an 8/7 speed shifter?0

The rear mech will be fine if you stick to the same brand ie Shimano or Sram, the front mech will be ok anyway.
But I don't really see the point to be honest. I'd stick with what you have if it is working ok, you won't notice much difference with what is available with 8 speed.0 -
The screw is stripped on my gear shifters and the cables aren't able to secure in.0

For now I'd get some more 7 speed shifters - what rear derailer do you have?0

Shimano Acera. Could you recommend any? And will the Speed Dial 7 Levers work with whatever you suggest?0
