Grit in the hub caps!!!!!
I have to clean behind the hub caps after every wet ride to remove grit which makes a grating sound.
Even after cleaning it sound 'gritty'. Wheels are quite new, bearings are fine.
Any thoughts?

Same here! And I was about to ask if maybe my new wheels were in some way faulty. They use their cars as shopping baskets; they use their cars as overcoats.0

I have since spoken to the UK Mavik importers and have potentially solved the problem. They say the hubcap should only be tightened to the point where you can still feel a minimal amount of lateral play on the axle. I tightened mine until there was no lateral play and then turned it anticlockwise about 1/16. The wheels are now quiet.Team Madison Genesis Volare & Condor Super Acciaio0

Traditionally mavic hubs use a preload cap, I have one even on my period 501 hubs, which many other makes have abandoned. There are pros and cons, you have discovered the cons. The Pros is that you can squeeze a little more life out of a shot bearing, as the preload cap allows you to play with the hub tolerances a bit more. Essentially it does (badly) what the cones do in angular bearings design (Shimano type)left the forum March 20230
