Hi ppl new to site so soz for the newbie talk ive got a clunking noise that sounds like its coming from the crank,if I pedal fast or with any force i get a random clunk which I can feel mainly on my right side it sounds like when you grab you crank arms and pull quickly and take the slack out of the chain that's the noise I got any ideas I've just got back to biking and be grudge paying a shop to look as have had bad experiences in past any help would be really appreciated. If it helps I'm running a 9 speed rear and 3 speed centre and only use the middle gear. Many thanks adam

  • Sounds like it could be the bottom bracket. But could be other things.

You are going to need specialist tools. Depending on what type of bottom bracket you have will depend on the type of tools you will need.

Replacing a BB is not a big job and wouldn't cost the earth. I would suggest finding a good local bike shop and ask them for a price up front.

By the time you have bought the tools etc... it would probably wouldn't cost that much more.

A good bike shop would be the low risk option. I'm going to take some stick for saying this....

It could be; bottom bracket bearing failing, or loose, stiff link in chain or worn chain, gears not indexed correctly, freehub broken, pedal failing, or numerous other things. If you need to ask you probably need to find a professional you trust.
  • Thanks for the replys pretty much rule out gear indexing got them running really nice in all gears one thing I'm good at lol and just put a new chain on and the noise seems worse so next plan is to look at cassette but doesn't look to worn in regards to tools are the sets out of halfords any good or anyone got any suggestions I aggree that a bike shop would be the easier fix but don't learn anything that way many thanks adam

Are you sure that your test of the cranks isn't just showing you the pick-up in the free-hub? I once had a clunking noise that seemed to be bottom-bracket, but which turned out to be pedal bearings. When I swapped to a different set of pedals the problem vanished.

  • I got a set of lifeline tools about 7 years ago and have been adding and replacing bits over the years. I think it was about £50 back then but the seem to be a lot more these days.

I can't speak from experience of the halfords stuff. Some kits don't contain all of the tools that you may need so check before you buy. CRC seem to do some pretty good value tool kits. That's where I would personally look.

Have a look at the Park videos some are good. The Park Blue Book could be a good start too.

Do you know anyone that you could bribe with beer to show you stuff?
  • Thanks for the info might tap the engineer where I work for some tools to do a check before paying out lol with the pedals changed them for wide base set and greased once installed also with the pick up with the free hub is that the point the crank engages with the chain and rear cassette? Hate to ask but just getting a grip with it if the noise is from there is it normal as its a noise which happens a lot if my explanation is totally wrong soz lol thanks adam
  • Noises are very difficult to diagnose without actually being there. Don't be afraid of approaching a well established (or new) cycle shop. Most are only too willing to give advice and assessment, most are run by enthusiasts! :D
  • Thanks for the replys got a tool kit and gonna have a look also got some v8 pedals to fit hopefully that does it will post results later
