I've finally managed to convince my mate to do his 1st 100km ride. I'm going to use my favourite route which is basically pretty much straight North out and back (with a little East / Westiness at the start and end)

I've just checked the long distance Weather forecast.

Time Weather Temp Feels Rain Cloud Speed Gust Dir
0 - 12 Weather conditions 0 °C -5 °C 1.2 mm 93 % 20 mph 40 mph North
12 - 24 Weather conditions 1 °C -3 °C 0.0 mm 30 % 15 mph 32 mph North

with snow

So basically we're going to be cycling INTO a 40mph blizzard at something like -3 to -5 for about 30 miles.

Okay, I'm exaggerating but this ride is going to put hairs on our chests. (note that almost half of the ride is on trails, i.e. off-road)

The sun always shines in Leicestershire.

Not so sure about Notts & Derbyshire though.
  • We're going up to Parsley Hay.... need I say more? (you know the area, and know what it's like out there)

You should go to Monyash instead (or as well) - there's a proper little Cake Stop there that does decent food, the young lady serving coffee is jolly nice too, and as a bonus the drop down into the village is steep enough to coast it at 40+mph. Most welcome after 60+ miles on the way oop t'north.

That's only a couple of miles further on.

That's the one. It's a popular cyclists' stop-off apparently so no bother wandering in wearing lycra.
  • and keeping the bikes safe? I guess a cable lock would be enough

I left mine outside unattended & unlocked on both visits. It's in the middle of nowhere, there were a few people sat outside that seemed to be a mix of natives & cyclists and the girl on the till told me the bike would be quite safe. And I fancied a walk to Manchester anyway. :)

Safe as houses. You don't want to be carrying any more than you need to, and locks are just dead weight, esp after a few hours in the saddle.
  • Well - I'm going to make sure we're both okay for the ride - wrap up warm if it's needed. I'm kind of looking forward to some bad weather as long we're suitably dressed. The ride back should be epic.
