Mavic Kysrium Elites ....can get them for around £400...strong, light and fast ! Or if you want aero Planet X clincher carbons for £400 are pretty untouchable for the price

    For posing or.... ?
    More problems but still living....
  • What you're looking for will depend a lot on you so it would help if you could add some info -
    1) Type of use (commuting, club rides, sportives, racing etc),
    2) Roughly what you weigh,
    3) Your riding characteristics (if you know them). Do you have a huge sprint? Rock the bike a lot when you're out of the saddle etc?

A 140lb rider who does long steady rides and climbs in the saddle has very different needs to a 180lb trackie looking for some race wheels that can survive his sprint.

All that said, Herbsman is on to a good thing there (with the right no. spokes).
  • 1) typical weekend morning 40/50 milers out into Northumberland

    2) 13 Stone

    3) Riding characteristics - slow and unfit :)

£400 will get you a great pair of hand built wheels, much better than factory built IMHO. I can recommend Harry Rowland http://www.harryrowland.info/ , or Ugo here also makes wheels - others have recommended him.

For example, Ambrosio or Shimano 105 hubs, Mavic Open pro rims, 32 Sapim race spokes or the like.

    Definitively a Rowland's disciple... :D

No, I had two spokes snap at the same time!

I do like the excellight rims though, even if they're only a tiny bit lighter than open pros.

I don't have pmp hubs but I read that they're very good quality.

Seriously if you have £450 the best wheels (I think) are the race 23 from Wheelsmith in Scotland. These are sub 1300 gram wheels with better quality hubs, rims or spokes than you would get from Mavic or Campag for the same price. As these are hand built, you can always get new rims if you crash or wear these out!

They are nice... they are not sub 1300 grams though by my maths.
Rims are 474 grams each, I weighed a few of those... hubs are 290 for the pair as declared, spokes are just under 200 grams... a bit for the nipples... around 1450 I would say...
    Still very light

Sorry I realised that I got the weight wrong; however I cannot think of a better general road wheel at this price.

I do have a pair of Wheelsmith wheels with different rims and PMP hubs and they are certainly better than the Campagnola Euros wheels that they replaced. I am currently saving up for a set of carbon rim wheels with the same hubs and spokes as the race 23!
  • Could you stretch to 500? Could get a pair of dura ace c24s for that - excellent wheels.

That is less of a good deal in my opinion.
Planet X sell the same rims (Gigantex) with rebranded Novatec hubs and the same spokes at nearly half the price.
Contrary to popular belief, carbon rims are much easier to build than conventional alloy ones... so I trust Planet X ones are just as good as Wheelsmith's but roughly 250 pounds cheaper...

PS: Here I am making the educated assumption that Wheelsmith uses neither rim nor spoke washers, which would improve the build... these days almost nobody bothers

  • I bought some Shimano RS80 C24s from Planet X for £300. They are similar to Mavic Kysiriums in terms of performance, but those are £450. The C24s are basically Dura-Ace rims and spokes with Ultegra hubs, so they are pretty good value for money!
  • No Tubes Alpha on American Classics, DT Revs?

Circa 1300g sub £500 from JRA.

    I'm 10st mind!

    Fixed that for you ;-)

+1 for the Cosmic Elites for a cheap set of wheels. Was a little surprised how heavy they are when I got them, but really nice wheels to ride on for the price.

Planet X don’t appear to identify the source of their rims, however I have been informed that these are Chinese "Carbontec" and not Gigantex. The spokes are also different.

I had been informed the tubulars were Gigantex... I might be wrong. Having seen both PX and Gigantex rims it is a case of spotting the tiny little differences if you find any.
Some builds use Pillar spokes, others use CX Ray, I was referring to the latter, although the 1422 Pillar bladed are very good as well

  • Our rims are indeed by gigantex , the best rim factory in the far east . They produce mavic , bontrager , and most others .
