    Thank you :)

While MD Jong-Ill is promising big things everytime he swans in the office every new moon with the porsche, using more in fuel that day than what I get paid. 1year waiting for a payrise for doing a ms exam to keep the gold partnership malarkey, I'm more than ready to beggar off even if there is a slight chance of a career.

But getting paid what your worth is....

The usual Monster, Fish4jobs, Total Jobs there are mountains out there.

I am quite lucky where I am but I know the feeling of working for peanuts for a small company and all the spoils going elsewhere.

My other half is in the same boat she works in Estate Agency and in order to cut a massive commute she took a pay drop to be local and there isnt a lot round here at the moment. He actually goes to viewings in his Ferrari 360 and sits there for a lot of the day shopping for his next Upgrade a Ferrari F430 while all the girls in the office are flogged to death for when you break down the hourly wage pittance.

He also likes to take them for meals and show off buying 5+ bottles of champagne at £40 quid a pop and 3 course dinners for them all, nice you may think but he is just showing off his wealth. They would rather have an extra £50 in their pay packets.

The way of the world sadly. But get looking and vote with your feet!!!

    NHS Jobs

Indeed.co.uk - is like a search engine for jobs, and with the right key words will help identify some of the smaller recruitment agencies (smaller ones have more personal relationships with employers - in fact, a good recruitment consultant won't only get you interviews but will sell you so much that come the interview you can practically walk into the job.

    Total Jobs

    Reed.co.uk

    I don't bother with Monster.

These days I'm not sure it matters that much which jobsite you use, I generally just update my CV to half a dozen of them and agency calls start coming in. I think the main thing is to make sure you have the right key words in your CV, and with technical IT jobs its important to have your skills and competency levels clearly laid out in a table.

Also, if you're not doing it already, I'd recommend setting up a little virtual lab for yourself at home so you can brush up on more recent server products before you start interviewing. Then make a decision as to whether you want to go for 1st/2nd line or 3rd. The good thing about working for a small company is that you get a wide range of experience, but conversely it also means you don't get to specialise very much. If thats what you want your focus to be then emphasize that.

Thank you very muchly peoples :) not had to look seriously for a while but it's finally sank in I'm being led by the nose into a dead end job with no prospect of better position, for a mug who thinks he owns our souls 24/7 because he currently pays our bills (barely).

Kick in the teeth was the missus in catering getting a bonus w£dge for xmas & we're struggling to get time off when our clients aren't even going to be in..

Look also for agencies specalising in your line of work.

I'm in IT (testing) and have contacts in:

    Cornwallis ELT
    Finshore
    Centre for Testing

Give those a ring and arrange to meet for coffee, they prefer to see you in person where possible.

Also join some groups on LinkedIn and use your profile to add your CV details, but I wouldn't suggest blatantly advertising your job hunt!

    @Bushu,

    Appreciate your situation;

However, I work in a massive software house (75,000 employees). We have not had payrises for 4 years now, I am losing people weekly, the attrition rate is through the roof! Although my salary is comparatively high as a 'Head of....'. I have to say that the market is not great. Most of our work is being shifted to India or Kuala Lumpur - hence the salary depreciation in this country.

For the record - my salary is now £15k off market rate for the decision making/seniority within the role.....

Do you have specific IT skill sets? Linux? IP - Cisco/Juniper? For the cash, sadly, allot of HR depts need to see very specific details before they will pass on CV's - I f*cking hate this!!! I think that even if you have no qualification in Cisco, but you are experienced, then I want to see you - convincing HR of this is a nightmare.

Microsoft bods seems to be ten a penny, however, if you have something very specific Dynamix or some coding, this can make the market very wide.

If you want to earn money in IT - get out of engineering! get into Sales, pre-sales or marketing, thats where the cash is.

I do know of a little company near Leeds that may need a Tech Sup person, but you may be swapping one dead end for another.

    Have a look on:

I've always found good old jobserve (www.jobserve.com) good for IT roles, both permanent and contract. Been using it for about 15 years now!

What kind of Telecoms? PBX or Mobile GSM? I have allot of contact in GSM/Telco environment.

As for VM and stuff, you could go into testing or R & D rig maint. We use a cloud service here based on VM - essentially, you build a rig yourself from the cloud, test the feature/bug and then kill the rig - saves us allot of time and effort with hardware.

Hmm - circuit switched x21 / x25 frame relay shit....old school now, I think there is still allot of call for Circuit Switched fallback knowledge in some networks (non IMS/VOLTE). Most technologies of this era are now on the Packet Core / Sigtran and SIP - RAN side of things in GSM still uses some of this technology when VOLTE fails or the end user switches from LTE to a 3g or 2g connection.

Shows a competence of protocols and routing on complex networks with weirdness! Those heady days of frame slip and FISU!
  • I've been using Jobsite to get me jobs over the last 10 years. Works a treat.

But it's not really the site itself that gets you the job. Recruiters seem to use it as a way to establish contact and then deal with you directly, with the jobs they send your way not being the one you applied for. Oh well.

In my previous job I walked out the door of my then-previous job on the Friday (redundant with garden leave), updated my CV on Sunday evening, uploaded it to Jobsite at 10am Monday, got a call from a recruiter at 2pm for an interview on Wednesday, and received the offer an hour after that interview. So good or bad, the system seems to work. :)

Oh, and then be prepared for 9 months of receiving unrelated job specs as low-rent scumbag recruiters keyword-match or shotgun-approach jobs at you. But that's why Gmail has a Spam button, I suppose.

Found a dozen or so to apply to when i get home, feel a bit too cheeky sending CV's from work...
Hope i've enough skills to bag me one of them for an interview, all a lot more generously paid

Can't thank you guys enough, as i deleted jobs bookmarks a while back when i got this job
