perhaps he's a shepherd and was just telling us Aldi do cycling gear?

back on topic, it's budget clothing, the winter jackets have their merits for what you pay, if it's all you want to spend or what your budget will stretch to it does its job.

I don't have any but most of it gets good feedback, although what people are comparing it with I don't know. Only negative I see get mentioned a lot is the cut is often a bit odd on the tops.
As for when the next one is, they generally don't announce it until a week or so before so best bet is just to sign up to their newsletter or keep checking here as there will be a PSA thread (or three...) about it. Oh and get there very early when they are on as the good stuff gets snapped up quickly in a lot of the stores.

Yes, twice a year in advance of summer and winter (march/april - ish and september- ish I think) When its gone its gone! Lidl too.

Its a mix - some crap, some outstanding value - I think captainlip is too harsh to write it all off just because its aldi. (given the manner in which he corrected your typo, I think he got out of bed the wrong side this morning....)

watch the bulletin boards, there's usually discussions about it on commuter general/commuter chat, which might give a sense of what's worth it and what's not.
  • Summer socks are good, winter gloves OK (but not water proof), over trousers OK (but waterproofing has worn out on mine in areas - 2/3 yrs use), bought some padded cycling trousers most recent, nice material but the padding is a bizzare place and not much use when its high up the back

Recent tool kit purchase helped me do some jobs on an old bike, but it isn't top quality, the multi-set if allen keys fell apart as I took it out of the kit  but I wasn't planning on using them, rest is worth having.

Decent enough stuff, at a cheap price. Good for commutes, not worring about loosing/wrecking.

Not tried the tops, shoes, jackets etc. but I would rather spend more on these important accessories.

My soft shell jacket - £15 a couple of years ago - has been out in all kinds of weather (except warm): blizzards, torrential rain, gale force winds, temperatures well below freezing. Fits well, functional, no signs of wearing out yet.
I would agree that some of their stuff is really not that good, but still mostly good value for the silly money - but the idiotic "crap" reflex that cheap gear gets is just, well, idiotic.

Wrong, I've got a pair of Aldi winter gloves, and an Aldi winter windproof jacket, still going strong after 2 winters

My Aldi gloves are great. Socks aren't so great, I prefer the Lidl ones which are a bit thicker.

I've bought quite a lot of cycling kit from Aldi over the years and so far it's been great stuff. OK, not for the completely 'Assos brigade' but for commuting (where being blazoned in names is not really an issue) they have been brilliant - in all weathers and for a few seasons (all).
I think nearly all Aldi/Lidl stuff is TUV approved so not really junk, one would hope.

The bottom line is if you don't get turned on by being the one with the big names (some are reffered to as 'all the gear, no idea', though they don't hear that) then it's good value kit.

    Hope it helps,

    Trikeman.

I expect quite a few things from Aldi to be good. Their 1973 Vintage brandy (24.99) is tremendous value. As is their Bordeaux Blanc (4.19). The Ultimate Pork Sausage range (1.99) is very good, the Pastrami (1.49) is the best I've ever tasted from a supermarket ,and their freshly squeezed OJ (1.29) great value. I could go on...

I use Aldi's cycling mitts and gloves - 4 pairs in total I think - again, tremendous value. In the coldest weather I use some Prendas Air Tunnel gloves instead, which decent value though they are still cost almost twice as much as the 4 pairs of Aldi gloves combined! Be aware that the fit of jerseys, jackets etc is aimed more at your average punter's build, not racing whippets, so that may be an issue, and you're not going to get the best technical fabrics.

But, if you can find products at Aldi that work for you, then go for it, as it's fabulous value. The snobbery that some people still apply to their products is to be welcomed - the stores seem to be getting very busy now, and I wouldn't want everyone down there snaffling up the decent stuff before I get there...
  • i bought the aldi winter tights and they are simply outstanding for the money.

Next Aldi cycle wear will be on sale next year now, they had the last one in September.

I have an Aldi jersey and jacket.
Jersey is ok and certainly for £10 or less its decent enough.
Jacket is excellent though, very warm and windproof and a zip pocket as well as normal unzipped pockets. The front zip is sturdy. I think it was £19 and i would easily put it on a par with stuff selling for £50. In this instance you dont get what you pay for, you get alot more!
I also have some winter gloves from 4 years ago, think they were £3 at the time, still going strong and do a decent job in 6c+. any colder and i wear a pair of thin wool gloves as as a liner.
    Cheers, Stu

Some of it's good, I've got three I bought and two of them are fine, one of them the zip is canoed. if you want to get anything you need to go there first thing in the morning as ebay traders just go and buy all the decent sizes and only leave the XXXXL size stuff that's only useful as a spinnaker on the front of a boat...

Or a fool and his money.....

FWIW - I've got shedloads of kit from all types of manufacturers. Price is not always a good indicator of quality.

Aldi socks I find to be so much better than some of the expensive cycling socks.

I have a gilet that was a fiver that I prefer to my Rapha one.

I've a rainjacket that gets a lot more use than my Rapha one again.

Their undervests are as good as any, and I've a couple of their winter jackets that perform as well as my £100+ ones.

You'd be a fool to write off the stuff without looking at it - or some kind of brand snob. It's not all good - but you can take it back for a refund if you don't like it.

Yes, I do. We now buy 80% of our weekly shop there (the other 20% from Asda) and are saving a significant amount of cash, with no quality compromise.

If you have an Aldi near you and still shop at Tesco/Asda, then for a large proportion of your groceries you're throwing money down the drain.

I do wear Assos bibshorts but I also know that Aldi cycling gear is always good value and sometimes exceptional value. I'm using their £6.99 overshoes as an "under overshoe" for the winter and their gloves are very good too and so cheap I bought two pairs using one pair with a fleece glove underneath for subzero days. Their softshell jackets (£15.00) are perfect deep winter commuting jackets, completely windproof, high quality zip etc. Their socks are low in price and high in quality.
  • Sorry for the spelling  - i'm sure i'm dyslexic. Really mean that. :(
I do have a Aldi near me so i will look out in the future.
I looked on there website and there is going to be a Ski sale. Some off the thermal base layers might be worth a look?

Now, their skiing gear is really good.
Bought a pile there year before last and when we turned up to the ski centre in/around Morzine the ski centre supplied the very same kit for their hire side - the instructor sort explained to us that it's good kit and lasts.

I bet he didn't know we bought it from Aldi for less than a week's hire of theirs. :P Right chuffed.

    Regards,

    Trikeman.

  • I've had a few things bought from Lidl and Aldi as well as browsing myself and I've never had an issue.

My Lidl winter gloves are great, as are my Aldi fingerless ones. The jerseys I have from Lidl are more than capable of putting up with the current weather and my next investment will be the shell jacket.

Although as I've been a good boy I have asked for a few things from Santa so I'll see what he brings first ;)

+1 for their winter gloves. They had loads of stock in my local store, and they ended up reducing them to 2.99 to shift em. Blinding value and very effective in the cold. Also got a long sleeve compression base layer, which is a brilliant piece of kit, all for £8. Getting loads of use, frequently washed and is good as the day I bought it. Think its one of the best pieces of kit I regularly use :)

If they are doing the thermal base layers as part of the skiing sale yu should definately have a look...
Titus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...
  • Another fan of the gloves. I bought another pair the following year but have yet to wear them, the first pair five years? old are still going strong! The base/compression wear are very good and the tights I bought this year are outstanding.(Or not, if you catch my drift).Lidl/Aldi are interchangeable these days in terms of the quality of the cycling clothing and great value. Not everything, of course, as usual you have to exercise your own judgement. Best not rely on other people's broadcast condemnations.

  • Lidl have winter sale on Thursday. Some thermal base layers and long jones - £4.99. I'll have some of those! :D
