Packing a bike for a flight

Hi i'll be moving to Taiwan and plan to take my bike on the flight with me.
Does anyone have experience flying with their bikes?
I'm a bit limited on the cash front and cant really afford one of these 250-400quid bike boxes. At a push i could possibly afford this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EVA-HARD-SHELL-BIKE-BOX-CYCLE-LUGGAGE-BOX-CARRYING-CASE-/360516252761?pt=UK_Sports_Leisure_Cycling_Bags_Panniers_SR&hash=item53f0717459 though it doesnt look particularly brilliant.
What I was originally considering was to get a sturdy box, pad it out and pack my bike into it. The pro's i can see from this being that its cheap and will fit into my weight+size bike allowance for the plane. The cons being that I don't know what condition the bike is likely to come out.
The third option I had considered was to make a basic wooden frame, pack the bike inside and then put on some thin plywood panels.
Can anyone offer some advice?
