Wheel advice for an old f*rt...

I'm in the process of buying a new road bike and the shop I'm buying it from (which starts with 'R' and is based in N. England) only gives you the choice of those new fangled wheels with 20 odd (or less!) spokes. In this instance it would be 105 hubs with Fulcrum 7 rims. It was quite a small pic but I counted about 20 spokes.
Now I've always ridden 32 spokers, partly because I don't trust so few spokes on a wheel, especially on the roads where I come from. They are a mess. I don't intend to race, I cycle for fun so I'm not too bothered about weight. Are these sort of wheels fine these days? Should I buy a set of 105/32 spokers?

A friend of mine has Shimano R500s, which apparently are rubbish wheels. He's had them for over 2 years, rides them everyday hitting potholes and everything and they're still fine.

I have no idea what's going on here.0
