Lunchtime Rides at Work

Hello post readers! I have recently found myself seriously restricted in my ride time after both me and my wufe have started new jobs, so really other than the odd weekend ride it lunchtimes all the way. I've not tried it yet; I've not worked out the site security. How do you manage it? Fitting in a ride and food and potentially changing gear in the space of an hour? We've got showers on site, but that would eat into ride time even more so I'm guessing anyone who does do lunchtime rides must take it easy...?

Absolutely no chance for me, I only get 30mins for lunch. But a 4.5 mile commute does just fine.

Take a 30 min lunch break the day before so you can take a 1.5 hour lunch break to go for a ride.

...Of course that's what you tell everybody. Really you just take a 1.5 hour lunchbreak both days :-)
  • All depends on your circumstances. I only work with one other bloke so I always go for a run in my lunch hour knowing I only have him to contend with and not an office full of people, and during the summer I often go for an hour on the bike to try and get up the leaderboard on some Strava segments so I go full on. I get back from lunch at 2:30 so quickly freshen up, change and then only have two and a half hours until I go home. In most office environments though, I wouldn't have a hope in hell of doing this.

I guess you have to look at how relaxed your employers are. Would they get the hump if you got back late having punctured on your ride, or do they mind you eating at your desk outside of lunch hours if required?

I get an hour and regularly do a 10 mile circuit up and over an 860ft hill (~666ft climbing). Lunch takes ~5 minutes to consume, the ride is 40-45minutes allowing 5 minutes each side for changing/recovery. I wouldn't say I take it easy, sometimes come back covered in mud if I take the off road path back down. Let's just say we have a work hard/play hard ethic so it's tolerated (I think).
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
  • I have the best of everything I run and live in a pub in the Peak District so can get out on an awesome ride on my break most days :)

i do lunchtime rides. I work flexi-time so can have up to a 2 hour lunch some days and work later to make the time up. I manage to get a 22 miler in and have a shower after. Ride takes about an hour and 10 mins, 5 mins to get changed, 15 mins for a shower after, so 1.5 hours in total. I eat my lunch at my desk after the ride, whilst I'm working.

I havea number of circuits from 13 to 22 miles depending on how long i want to ride for. Don't hang about, you need a quality session since it's such a short ride. 13 miler takes 40 mins, so I can fit it all into an hour.
  • My employers are pretty flexible. I usually eat lunch at my desk while I work (or rather, while I mess about on here), that way I can get an hour(ish) in for a ride, shower, change of clothes etc.

I work flexi time so I can take 1 hr 45 Mins if I want too.

I commute 4 miles each way and then perhaps one day a week I will ride in Lunchtime. I usually do a 15 mile Loop at Avg of 16.5-17mph. Takes 5 mins to change, 10 mins to change and freshen up when I get back and then I eat while I work.

I only do this in the Winter though as in the summer I ride in the evening. Just a way of keeping the mileage up. Having said that I have not commuted/ridden in 2 weeks now due to weather and other junk.
