Rusty Spokes

Have just taken on my wife's old racing bike as my new work bike. It's a pretty good work-horse (Carrera Gryphon has a pretty decent high(ish) grade aluminium frame)- only problem is it has rusty spokes. What to do?
It's not really worth upgrading wheels, just wondered if I could do anything to make them look better or prolong the life.
I wonder if sanding them down and spraying on some anti-rust paint (Hamerite?) might do the trick. But then the spokes cross each other so it would be difficult to get that bit to take and difficult to mask the hub and wheel so as not to get the paint all over everything.
Help!

wire wool and then some light oil. keep the oil off the rims and brakes."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
