Lung ache

Hey all
Gotta bit of a strange one......
I do quite a bit of riding 50% road, 50% MTB. If I ride at least any other day, I don't get this problem but if I have a small break between rides, I get what I can only describe as lung ache for the first 15-30 minutes of the ride.
The "ache" will start when I hit the first hill and is quite uncomfortable. It's as if I need to take a big breath and hold it to expand my lungs.
Once this feeling wears off, I can ride normally.
I'm quite fit and have no problems doing single day endurance rides like etape du dales (110 miles) or way of the roses (170 miles).
It is annoying me as I sometimes feel like a novice at the beginning of ride.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

has it only begun in the winter?0

It's definitely a bit worse in the cold but still happens during the summer.
It did start originally in the Winter a couple of years go when I first started riding. I thought (and hoped) that it was just my body adjusting to very cold air.0 -
I have had this afew times. If you live I a bit of a congested or polluted area it could just be the lungs clearing some gunk out. When mixed with cold air it can be rather cumbersome.0

I get the same as the OP. Exerecise induced astma was my DX from my GP. Was given ventolin but that didn't help. I raced last Sunday and had that "lung ache". I ignored the pain and raced hard and Monday coughed up some blood!0

I used to get the same thing, I used ventolin too... it didnt help much, it still hurt but it meant I could carry on through it, the thing that sorted it for me was using a powerbreathe as mentioned by DCR000 -
Thanks all! I'll look into powerbreath.0

I get this aswell, I put it down to the fact that I smoke. Lasts about 40 minutes for me.0

Sounds like exercise induced asthma, I get it occasionally.
It's more common in the winter as the air is cold and drier (usually!) and this type of air irritates the airways.
Have you ever smoked at all in life?0 -
Yeah, smoked for about 10 years. Gave up 4 years ago. I did wonder whether it was related to smoking or not.0

I just bought one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/ULTRABREATHE-breathing-exerciser-adjustable-resistance/dp/B007CI0ZBC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357940185&sr=8-1
First time using it, can see how it will work, or I should say feel it!0 -

[EDIT- Powerbreathe plus is adjustable but will get the ultrabreathe as it does look easier to keep clean!]
Not exactly lung ache myself, more of a wheezy blur and i'm sure i can feel the lack of oxygen to my muscles :?
Doubt smoking, commuting or regularly breathing in GT85 & similar kak helps0 -

Gotta say the ultrabreathe is making a difference.
When I'm using it I can feel my stomach muscles being used & on the few times I've been out since starting with it I've noticed that I seem to have more capacity in my lungs.
If only my legs would hold out as well.0 -
only had mine a few days but took a few reads of the leaflet to get it right and yeh its pretty good when you can feel it working, just feel a prat when doing it0
