Alp D'huez on a budget...

Hi Peeps

Looking for any decent website links for cycling holidays to climb Alp D'huez or any famous cols.

Ideally would like to fly out for a long weekend and do a few climbs, if anybody has any tips eg cheap flights to the nearest airport,accomodation etc etc I would be greatful...

As regards airports your best bet will definitely be Geneva. Other airports are closer (Chambery and Grenoble) but they are almost impossible to get to in the Summer. They are ski airports in the Winter. Airlines to chose from include Jet 2 and Easyjet. The latter have lots of flights to Geneva so you should be spoilt for choice. Expecta 3 hr drive to Bourg D'Oisans

The chalets are very nice and have heating. This would possibly be cheaper than a hotel and it's self-catering so you can keep your meal costs down. You've got somewhere secure to store your bike. I stayed in these at the beginning of June one year, when temps can still be quite cold, and the chalet was plenty warm enough with heating.

Also consider Lyon airport - 3hr drive from Bourg d'Oisans.

what sort of budget-- me and eight mates booked easyjet in jan to nice, cycle camped through the alps, over the Bonette, Vars,Lauterat, then camped for free in some woods outside bourg d-- place was full-- then did the alp d and a few other less know climbs.Returned to nice via barcellonette and the col de cayolle--- cheap as chips , took us nine days though but worth it.

Probably looking at Aug/Sept. Got a budget of about £500 and looking to do it over a long weekend if possible.....

Take a look at http://www.velovation.co.uk. We do a 3 day trip which includes Alpes d'Huez and all the other classics in the area. Flexible service, simple and well priced. There are a whole lot of other options available and all routes include excellent climbing up to infamous cols. Hope you find what you are looking for

Very interesting, could perhaps PM me with dates and prices etc. Me and a few guys are looking to fly out Friday and return Monday/Tuesday.

If theres 4 or 5 of you, im sure that driving and taking a couple of tents will easily be the cheapest option.

6 of us took a camper van there from Durham a couple of years back and wild camped in Alpe D'Huez, didnt cost much, think it was about £100 each in diesel including the Durham-Dover leg.

Calais to Alpe was about 10 hours drive in a camper van, would be less in a car.
