    Treat'em as you would cut flowers - plenty of water and keep the heating down, at least next to the tree. You can get bases a bit like a sort of jumbo dog bowl, which work really well.

    I have one of these - but now have a fake tree :)


    we use one like this

    has a little pop up float thing that tells you when to add a bit more water to it.

    We have something like this - not a lot of use now I use a fake tree.

    My main problem with fakes is the scaring you get when you look underneath them from where they insert the branches (look fine from on top though) Also I find some of the cheaper ones can look a little square.
