What is your experience with these Shimano shoes?

I am considering between the following shoes. The main difference I see is that R087 has a micro-adjust ratchet buckle. Is this beneficial and worth the money?

Shimano R087
Shimano R077

Higher level shoes have carbon soles. Are carbon soles useful or just gimmick?

I've used the R087 since January and they are a decent shoe for the money... It is worth getting the ratchet since its easier to adjust the shoe whilst on the bike...

and carbon soles are useful as they are stiffer allowing better power transfer, and also lighter. (they'll also generally come attached to a shoe with a better upper)

I have the 087's too and would recommend the ratchet. Velcro gives and slips over time. The ratchet ensures a comfortable/snug fit. They seemed reasonable value, fit my feet (they also sell a 'wide' version) and I can walk in them - a good commuting shoe me thinks.

Oh it got moved to road buying advice. Was wondering why it disappeared.
  • Another vote for the 087's , had them since last winter and they are going well. The ratchet works well and keeps a snug fit.

The RO87's are a decent shoe, I like them. Stiffer and lighter than the usual cheap shoes, although if you get some higher end Shimanos with a carbon sole then you can feel the difference in terms of weight and stiffness again.
  • I am afraid that I cannot assist you with these two models but I have a pair of shimano r105 shoes which has uppers that look similar in design to the ro77 but with a silver carbon sole so my thoughts might be worth considering. I have to say that for me these shoes have been a bit of a disapointment - I tend to get cramps in my feet and toes if I am not really careful about keeping them a bit loose and making sure I pedal as smoothly as possible. Obviously YMMV but I didn't have any issues with my last pair of bike shoes which were Look shoes (single velcro strap).

Owned the MO76 and put 10,000 miles down on them, now have the MO77, again very good shoes and they last for ages, very good VFM.
  • Ive been using a pair of the r087s for nearly two years and despite the constant use and high milage in all kinds of weather they are in great nick, they are not stinking either which is a bonus. I'll happily buy another pair....

I have some Shimano MTB ones and I personally think the ratchet feels very cheap and flimsy. Never let. Me down, but would like a firmer one next time
