Hi guys I'm new to the road bike scene and just got myself a giant defy 4 .I also have a Xc bike and 99% of my clothing is for the mtb I have a fox flux helmet I paid about £60 for it and it is spot on.do I need a new helmet for the road as using the fox flux would look stupid rite? Or doesn't it matter? I can remove the peak on it so it doesn't look so bad .
When i die I just hope the wife doesn't sell my stuff for what I told her I paid for it other wise someone will be getting a mega deal!!!

a peak can seriously restrict forward vision.

as far as helmets go comfort is the main thing. I would use what you have unless you really want to splash more cash. and then when you have worked out how it is for ventilation maybe look at another one.

a helmet is a helmet i would have thought... as long as it does the biz when you hit your head on the road, not a lot else matters. depends whether you give a fig about being fashionable or not.

Keeping the peak on can result in neck ache - as annoying as having to tilt head back to see further up the road all the time....
However depends how you ride your road bike... if you are on the hoods and have a more relaxed setup (spacers under stem etc) it may not be such an issue.
If you wear a cotton cap under helmet then at least you can postion that better than a piece of plastic and is useful for keeping raindrops off
example of cotton cap in filthy weather approach ...:

    Do you need a helmet?
  • Existing one should be fine; there's not a lot to a helmet and there's a fair amount of crossover in the styles of MTB and road helmets anyway (sans peak); some more than others. I wouldn't worry about the opinion of anybody who thinks less of you for wearing an MTB helmet even if they do notice!

It remains to be said that for those who need to care (and only those who need to care!), some helmets are a little bit more aerodynamic than others, but it's a miniscule concern. You would think that all of the pro teams would have opted for closed-vent hats if it really mattered, and Sky/Team GB are the only ones I've noticed.

See how you get on in the drops at speed. For me my giro hex was like a parachute and caused me neck ache in the drops.
