Im looking for a waterproof, windproof jacket for general xc/trail use. I tend to get quite hot whilst cycling, so I want it to be breathable and not too thick/heavy. I also want a fairly loose fit that is suitable for off the bike use as well.

The Royal Racing Matrix looks like the best option from what ive seen so far?

Is there any other products out there that I should be considering? Will the above be suitable for what I want?

Thanks

or you could have the 2011 version for even less: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... tedKingdom

It's about the most breathable properly waterproof jacket I've found for around the £100 mark. But tbh none of them are going to be "properly" breathable when you're hammering out of the saddle.

I do like the look of that Royal one though, and my experience with their products has always been good.

If you want high level of breathability and waterproof then Goretex Active Shell or eVent. That will cost premium. Any cheaper fabrics (PU coatings) may be great keeping rain away but breathability is only theoretical.

I see your point, but all of the jackets I have seen made from these materials are xc/road, tight fitting ones?

This is thick, but I've got one and it is brilliant. I don't get too hot in it with just a baselayer underneath. I'm looking a "proper" waterproof jacket but can't justify it at the moment, as this was only £15.

I bought a Berghaus Ridgeway jacket which is only 300g and comes with pit-zips, from TK Maxx for £70 (RRP £135). Surprisingly they often seem to have reasonable end of line outdoor stuff sensibly priced.

  • I'd go for a soft shell with a good DWR. Any jacket with a membrane, Goretex, eVant or other will be less breathable. A good DWR will keep you dry apart from prelonged heavy rain.
