Lordy, where is my credit card....?!

Is titanium really the ultimate bike building material? or just a fad for CEO's and Lawyers?

  • At least it's not a Budnitz, expensive titanium beach cruisers.

Shimano on a hand made Italian bike though, tut tut tut.

This is true, but I have Shimano specific tools in the shed......I don't have Campag tools.
  • Yeah, buying some Campag tools to go with your £6k frame would be too expensive. :D

That is gorgeous. I'm really lusting after titanium bikes at the moment. This is nearer to my price bracket. But still out of the question at the moment. If I were to come into some money I'd go ti with discs like Rob has.

But those forks! What were they thinking?!

I'm firmly in the 'I don't understand what all the fuss it about' camp, when it comes to ti. What is it? The material is nearly as light and stiff as carbon, but not as mouldable, and most times when you drop a carbon bike it will bounce, whereas a ti will dent. What's the appeal?

Is it wrong that I hanker after a vintage steel frame?

I would stick as much shimano on it as possible, all this cr@p about not putting it on an italian bike, that's just bike snob nazi b0llocks.

I saw a beautiful Passoni in the flesh in Cyclefit earlier this year. Eye-wateringly gorgeous. Matte Black painted Ti (I happen to like painted Ti) with Matte silver decals and Enve deep rim tubs. I'd love a Ti frame at some stage. Passoni and Legend are firmly at the top of my list - although specced with Campag not ShimNo.

No. It demonstrates taste and an appreciation of the benefits of proven engineering.

Doesn't have to be vintage, either, you can still get Real Frames made today.

    Cheers,

that really is a sexy bike - never ridden titanium before - I think the only thing I would consider changing on that bike is the seatpost.

If only so that the forks can match the frame properly. This is my biggest niggle with Ti bikes: lovely minimalist, straight-tube, bare metal frame and... oh, some mismatched blobby black forks.

I think 'mismatched' forks can look good though. Say a Ti frame with ENVE Forks, Stem and Seatpost. This is getting close, but decals are the wrong colour and the Shimano + wheels just don't suit the frame:

Not sure why - but I cannot do the compact geometry (sloping top tube). Works on a carbon bike, but for some reason it looks pants, to my mind, in steel or Ti. Ti and Steel Horizontal TT only - with 'fag paper' clearance seat stay.

As for forks, there is something about straight blade big aero's that is f*cking cool...makes a statement and makes the bike look like it is moving even when stationary....

Completely agree re the Frame. I'm not really a fan of the overly 'compact' look tbh. That's why Pretorius aren't on my list, whereas this is:

Now you are talking, I don't like compact frames either, my current alu trek has a flat TT and I prefer it.

    That's looks lush though
