Chainring question

I picked up an old Rayleigh for the winter & want to change the inner chainring from a 42t.

It's an 8speed set up.

Will any inner chainring (with correct BCD) fit, or do I need an 8speed specific one?

I would have thought that any one would do.

9 or 10 speed right will be narrower width, but the pitching of the chain is the same so is readily interchangeable.

Stronglight ones from Spa Cycles are reasonably priced.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
