Right I'm wanting to swap sram red for campag athena black on my cervelo s2 but I have terrible knowledge of bottom brackets, especially when cervelo try to be so different! For this groupset http://www.shinybikes.com/Campagnolo-At ... Speed.html.

What bb do I need to select? I know English thread but would that fit bb30??

(I hate bottom brackets!!)

  • Not sure what bottom bracket type the Athena chain set uses but according to this:

you will probably need an adaptor to have it work. Have you tried asking/searching the Cervelo forum?
    http://forums.cervelo.com/forums/5.aspx
They have been pretty good with answering my stupid bb questions!

I agree the about the entire bb thing it is probably the most confusing part of a bike.
  • Thanks for the reply andy,

It says on the comparability chart it needs a press fit adapter, however I have been told that I need the English threaded bb supplied with the groupset and everything should be fine. Not tried posting on the cervelo forum but I regularly browse it, had a quick search of past threads/posts and couldn't find anything.

BB Bright is Cervelo's version of BB30 and you need a press-fit adaptor - suggest you search Cervelo forums - BTW, you need Powertorque BB cversion, not Ultratorque for Athena.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Thanks mate

Have you looked at the options on the product page in the original post. There are bb30 options.

If not any of those, then this- http://www.probikekit.com/uk/campagnolo ... e_base_gbp?

Fevmeister, that seems about right, on my R5 I bought the cups for Ultra torque from PBK, they were a tight fit and I gently knocked them in with a rubber mallet.

The Cervelo forum says that they need gluing in with Loctite, but the Campag instructions just say to tap them in.

I haven't ridden mine yet due to the shite weather, so can't confirm, my LBS reckons that he fits with a little grease so that they will come out easily, not sure about that though!

Over on Weightweenies there have been reports of creaking Campagnolo cups due to the quality of the fit between parts. I'd suggest the use of semi-permanent Loctite 641 bearing fit which is designed precisely for this kind of application. It holds the parts pretty firmly but still enables them to be dismantled if necessary - it's used on high-integrity components on aircraft, so is good enough for a bike BB.

  • Ok cool thanks guys. I think I'm going to take the plunge and go for centaur (carbon is alluring!). In that case I would need the ultra torque bb press fit cups?

Velonutter, I tried to pm you about your wheels but doesn't look to have worked when I check my outbox! How do you get on with braking in the wet. You said you rebuilt the rear, simple trueing?

I too have Campag centaur carbon and it runs the powertorque BB system and NOT Ultratorque !!

Be cautious when it comes to Shiny Bikes , read my previous posts for my experince.

The current centaur runs powertorque, but the 2009 centaur (the first year with the new style ergo design) was ultratorque.

Yup, 2009 and 2010 Veloce, Centaur and Athena were Ultratorque (in fact, all the new shape lever groups were Ultratorque as there was no Powertorque then).

2011 onwards and those three groups use the new budget Powertorque system - Ultratorque kept for Chorus, Record and SR.

You can tell the difference superficially by the logo shapes:

    old:

    new:
    1276596101368-1t0lmv1agso4m-150-70.jpg

Also, the Powershift groups don't have the multi-shift thumb lever - just the standard one-shift thumb button.
  • Thanks all for the replies much appreciated, I meant I am going to go for chorus not centaur! That would be a downgrade from athena, instead I will spend a bit more and hopefully get a better groupset?

800 is a good price too so no problems there.

In this case I will need ultra torque cups!

Spent a while this morning trying to source Loctite 609/641 and primer 7649.

Finally I contacted Loctite (Henkel) in the UK and have just had a reply as follows: -

"Loctite 609 is not sold in Europe (American product), Loctite 603 is the best alternative in UK (10ml bottles) Loctite 7649 is sold in 150ml aerosols"

http://www.tooled-up.com seems to be one of the main suppliers with cheapish postage.

So looks like I am going to have to knock out the cups and follow this procedure when the stuff arrives.
  • Jesus Christ... What a lot of hassle to fit a chain set... Would put me off completely buying such frames. Personally I think all these press fit bottom brackets were one of the most stupid innovations applied to bicycles...

Totally agree, what a palaver, no wonder Colnago hasn't gone BB30 or BBright.

My R3SL never had BBright and I really didn't know what a load of hassle would be involved when I bought the R5.

Now it is going to be an absolute bitch to knock out the BBright cups on the R5 so that I can apply these glues!
