Communication...

Posted this in the Commuting section but some of you who do commute may not visit it!

Basically, I'm doing my final year at University and just have a couple of question to ask for my Design Dissertation.

When commuting is there any sort of communication between fellow riders? Even other motorists?
What topics of conversations are attempted?
Bad roads? Bad driving? What you done at the weekend?
Where is the communication held on the communicate? (Junction, bike path, etc)
How do you communicate with each other?

Do you think that communication makes a more interesting journey?
Does it make safer?
Can it make safer?

If possible is there another way you would try to communicate with others? (Not telepathically, obv)

I'm just looking to create a discussion within a commuting community to gain a good understanding of communication on a commute. I'll try and pipe in with some extra questions or answers if possible!

  • Out on a ride yesterday...

    1. I put my hand up and nodded to thank one elderly gent pedestrian who was half way across the road and stopped in the middle to let me pass.

    2. Waiting at a set of lights the passenger in a taxi wound his window down - 'here we go, abuse!' I thought - but he actually just shouted nice bike (Specialized Tarmac) and then the taxi driver drove off. Normally the only communicating with drivers I do is shaking my head at them when they pass with about an inch to spare.

Sometimes if I'm out riding and overtake/am overtaken by another cyclist we might acknowledge each other's existence in the world, either with a nod, pleasantries about the day, or perhaps even riding together for a short while if moving at similar speed. I might talk to another cyclist about their equipment.

If riding with a friend I'll often chat a little so whoever is leading off will need to look back occasionally (also to check you're there) or ride side by side, so I suppose that is a danger.

If by another method of communicating you perhaps mean a radio-mic system like pro teams use, I think it might be interesting to see if something like that could have a commuter application.

i dont see many fellow riders on weekday rides but without a doubt make great efforts to communicate by hand signals to drivers - especially at junctions etc - the awareness of cyclists here is 'zero', but that does mean there is no two tribes mentality, so a thumbs up and wave goes a long way to establishing respect and awareness on the roads..

When commuting I don't see many cyclists (it's only 10mins) but there is one particular junction that every other cyclist I see goes about 20m (not an exaggeration) over the line to get a head-start on the traffic and most of the time I just mutter "Don't be a d*ck" as they pass me waiting at the light. Not the best communication ever, but thought I'd share!

nice to see some niceties from a Taxi Driver! Was this a one off (motorists in general), or has this happened a few times before (nice words, rather that bad mouthing)?

It would be a nice thought. COuld have a lot of people talking at once!

How about communication with the road infrastructure? Bicycle specific signage, interactive dot matrix signage? hindrance or a good way of promoting safety?

If I pass a cyclist on the other side of the road I'll generally nod and raise my hand to say hi. But being in London its usually met with a blank look. Londoners aren't great at communicating with people they don't know.
