So how far do you go on a ride?

I know I'm posting this in the road beginners, but I'm curious as to how far we novices ride at the weekend?
I'm up into the 30's now and appreciate choice of routes and how hard your working plays a part in how far we go.
I got my first road bike in August so happy with my progress from my first 8 mile outing

Similar timing on my side... and 30-40 miles per session once a week (typically on a Sunday)... slowly trying to build up!0 -
If the roads are dry and not icy first thing, then I'm currently doing 19 miles two or three times during the week, and then a longer ride at the weekend. Last weekend I did a flat 40 miler, but today I only managed 26, since I couldn't start till the afternoon and the traffic was awful, so I cut it short to avoid having to be in the traffic in the dark.
I started in early October this year.Is the gorilla tired yet?0 -

Where in London do you ride?0 -
On a Sunday, usually around 100 km on a club run. In the week, if I go out on my own then usually 50 km or so. Joining a club soon after I'd bought my first road bike dropped me in at the deep end in terms of distance! I soon got used to it though.0

usually 30-40 miles at a weekend, one ride only
If I'm pushing it I might do more. However, been off the bike for a couple of months (injury and now in Qatar) so probably only fit to do about 3 miles when I get back...
It's just a hill. Get over it.0 -
I was hitting 30 miles prior to a stinking cold and starting work. Now Its whatever I have time for, Looking to get back to around 30 miles asap, but depends on weather and work. Glad of the Turbo I bought.0

I'm doing 2 rides of around 30 miles on the weekend plus a couple of 15 mile rides on the weekend. I'm averaging 86 miles per week over the last month. Hopefully I can keep it up as the colder months approach.0

I have a small boy, so it's more about quality and effort rather than time. It's only really 1.5 hours on a ride, so as far as i canSalsa Spearfish 29er

Try to get 100 miles a week in but i generally only get out twice a week and it's usually between 40-60 miles, i'm at home with two young lads so you make the most of what time you have.
I've done quite well this year though and i'm heading for 5000 miles for the year, i'm just praying that the weather stays ok because i've got 610 miles to do in 6 weeks which should'nt be a problem.0 -
20-30 miles on a Wednesday night with my 70+ Dad and 30-40 on my own on a Sunday morning - Can't manage too much more on a Sunday, it gets a bit boring on your own!0
-
Around 80 miles across 2 weekend rides. I have a bit of time during the week at the moment so I'm able to get a few more miles in.0
-
On my own usually 30-40 miles but with the club 70 miles.0

25-50 miles for a weekend solo rides, get bored with anything longer unless I'm heading somewhere and not doing a loop.
40 mile round trip during the week, 4-5 days, averaging 200 mile weeks this year. go me.0 -
10 miles each way commute and kids willing a club run on a sunday of 60 -70 miles.
So an average of 160 miles a week .FCN 3/5/90 -
If there are 7 days a week without rain I will ride 5 times (so normally 3 or 4 times) but only have time (like other ops, due to kids) for rides between 12 and 18 miles but they are hilly so I get a good workout. Every weekend I plan a 30+ and then it pees down and I chicken out. I know! time to MTFU but I want to enjoy my first long ride so will wait until I get a weekend when it doesn't rain.
No matter how many times I go out it never seems enough time for a turbo trainer I thinks0 -
during autumn winter, around 70-80 miles a weekend. summertime will be 3 evenings, and then the weekend as well, probably doing around 150 a week. more if i get a better bike!0

A couple of weeks ago I did a 36 on Saturday and 30 on Sunday. And 2 x 6 mile rides in the week; just to keep the cycling withdrawal symptoms at bay.
Last week just 1 x 6 miles mid-week and only managed 30 on Sat, 17 on Sunday.
I want to get to a point where I can do 30 on back to back days easily and then add another 5 miles each day. If I can achieve 50 on 2 consequetive days I plan to cycle to the in-laws and back.0 -
Started in early september and pre accident was doing was doing about 80 miles a week.Did my first one saturday after 3 weeks as a slow recovery effort.Going to take a while to build up again but got a TT now so that will help.Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori0

40 - 80 on the weekends.0

Try and do 60 miles at the weekend if I can, if not at least 30.
Mid week, max would be 2x30 miles, more likely 2x20 miles or one longer one, and less in the dark, wet, cold winter months - currently not getting out at all during the week due to work commitments and the weather.WyndyMilla Massive Attack | Rourke 953 | Condor Italia 531 Pro | Boardman CX Pro | DT Swiss RR440 Tubeless Wheels

Can we count the 60-100 miles we do in the gym per week ?Salsa Spearfish 29er

30 miles every Thursday night and 8 miles a day to work and back0

On any given day enywhere between nothing and 250 milesconstantly reavalueating the situation and altering the perceived parameters accordingly0

Miles are irrelevant for me in training, all my sessions are time based, that said, my minimum ride is 1hr, which is normally 17 miles, give or take, longest can be up for 5-6hrs (100ish miles)0
-
Thanks everyone, so it seems 30-40 milers are the average for those beginners amongst us, I agree though that a lot depends on personal time available with family's etc.
I'm pleased that I'm not far off that mileage, but at the end of the day I just enjoy what I do
I know that distance isn't everything and how hard you ride / challenge yourself is just as rewarding but
1year ago I was 16.5 stone, 40" waist, xxl chest  Now 13.2 stone, 34" waist, m chest
Cycling has had a huge impact on me and my lifestyle, I'm loving it!0 -
I did a 38 mile loop on Saturday, which was nice. Made me think i'd like to join a club soon. Closest one does 30- 50 miles on the "easier ride" so i'm hoping i might be able to cling on for dear life.
On Sunday i took my dad and sister out for a ride on our mtbs. A much less enjoyable experience- constant moaning on their part! Really draining for me as i had to keep nagging them to continue before it got dark!
Felt really bad when i found out we did 15 miles (they hardly ever go out on bikes). Think i over estimated their comfort levels. :oops:0 -
I'm currently doing 30 miles both Saturday and Sunday. After the Sunday cycle the legs feel the burn a bit.
I did a 28 mile ride last Monday at night, but didn't enjoy the unlit stretches of road, I need a much better front light!
I would do a regular 30-40 midweek ride if I had a better front light / once the evenings are lighter. Instead I do 3 workouts for 30 mins on an exercise bike, just to keep the fitness up for the weekend cycle.0 -
I was trying to up my speed for 30 - 40 mile rides so I could join a club.
When I finally managed a flattish 45 mile run at smidge under 20 (it killed me by the way) I thought I was ready. So I did my first club run last weekend 52 miles ......... but there is a big difference, they only count riding speed, so their little breaks for water, food and a chat don't count. So in my terms they averaged about 13mph which made the whole thing a lot less daunting.
Going one up to the 16 mph 70 miler this weekend.0 -
Dont really bother with miles its all about time...but probably no less than 35 miles and no more than 70 on any given day.0
