Lowest Ever Turn-outs

In Wiltshire, the first police area to announce results, only 15.3 per cent of eligible voters turned up to cast their vote. According to Police Exchange, the think tank which originally proposed the commissioners's role, turnout will be the lowest of any national poll in British history.

Only 15 per cent of the public are expected to vote, which is significantly lower than the 23 per cent who turned out in the 1999 European elections, the worst ever turnout in a national poll.

The newly elected commissioners will be responsible for the budgets, strategies and priorities of their respective police forces, and will be paid up to £100,000 per year.

Voters around the country have taken to the social networking site Twitter to report low turnout at poll booths across the country.

One voter, Paul Taylor, said: "Voted in West Oxfordshire around 16:00. First voter in two hours said staff".

Another vote, Ian Storey-Less, said: "Walked into our polling station at 14:25 and the staff jumped a mile when we opened the door".

11% turnout in Staffordshire and elected an insipid, odious, well you know...

Just what difference are these Police Commissioners going to make?

Apparently the voting process cost the taxpayer £75m. All part of the government cutbacks!!

At least 'Two Jags' Prescott didn't get in in my area despite the fact that he has been swanning around the shire as if he was a shoe in for weeks. Although I think only 11 people voted, surely it cannot have been 11%

Well I had a postal vote and I couldn't even be bothered to return the pre-paid envelope! What a waste of money!

I had 2 candidates to choose from, 1 labour and 1 conservative, neither of whom I had ever heard of nor had any information regarding.

I detest politics and all politicians, I would halve the number of MPs, get us out of Europe to get rid of MEPs and cut local councillors. Where I live I have a village councillor, a local councillor, a county council, an MP and and MEP. I wouldn't trust any of them to organise a drinking binge in a distillery!

My local MP thinks it's fine to be photographed drinking at a stag do at Savoie, in the French Alps with a bunch of mates who dressed in Nazi uniforms.
