Wheelset Tips

Howdy,
I'm looking to build a new steel hardtail (26" wheels) XC bike. Most likely to go with a Cotic Soul.
My riding: trail centres, XC club rides around the Chilterns and a few Enduro/Sportives/Races throughout the year.
If you were in my position, what wheelset would you go for or, if you were having a wheelset built, what components would you buy?
So far, a few people have suggested Mavic Crossmax SLRs; however, suggestions are welcome.

Light, strong-ish, tubeless ready, and the hubs are basically DT Swiss 240S.Uncompromising extremist0 -

Superstar only recommend that wheelset for XC use. And BOR say XC/marathon + "WARNING: NOT All Mountain / Enduro / DH!" (their exclamation mark)
TBH if you're looking at light XC rims you most probably shouldn't be getting a Soul.Uncompromising extremist0 -

This from the guy who likes to remind us how anything is rideable on anything and who has done Fort Bill DH on a fixie or something
Anyway, I had initilly written that post with Arch EX in mind before seeing that new wheelset. Just forgot to change it.
However, considering the op stated:Dizzy12 wrote:My riding: trail centres, XC club rides around the Chilterns and a few Enduro/Sportives/Races throughout the year.
And said he's been looking at Crossmax SLRs, I stand by that recommendation.
I do agree with you though. If I was looking for an XC race bike, the soul would not be my first choice.
@OP, any particular reason why it MUST be steel?0 -
Don't waste your money on CX-Rays, higher fatigue life, but otherwise no point, just get Revs for the same weight, or Super Comps/Competitions for a stiffer wheel.
I'd get A2Z hubs on your choice of Stan's rim, Crest for my money, or DT 240s for more of a known quantity. 1400-1500g and more reliable than SLRs!0
