Another shoe/clip question

Am I right in thinking the main difference between SDP & SDP-SL is the clets and SDPs are more recessed so you can walk in them better and the pedals are double sided?
I currently have straps and looking maybe to add some shoes and cleats on the xmas list but not too sure what I need. It's used to commute on main roads into city few lights so some clipping in/out and i also need to be able to walk in them as I drop my Son off at school and have to walk from one side where the bike rack is to the other where his class is so need something easy to clip in/out ideally double sided clipping in (as the toe strap cages have tendencey to hang wrong way up so I normally have left foot loose) and what shoes would work with them I keep looking at the DHB as on a budget I have size 9 feet do I order normal size I know fitting styles can be different but I understand the DHB be normal sizing?
Thanks
Andy

I got mtb shoes because I have to walk a little way from where I store my bike to where I work and I wanted something more solid to walk on. Very pleased with them so far. Obviously you can adjust the tension to make it easier to clip in and out and I've had no problems. I toppled over on my second ride but just because I overbalanced on my clipped in side at a junction. No one saw and as such it didn't happen....

Got the PD-M530 pedals for a wider platform but now not sure why I bothered.. totally happy with the performance / use of them though.

Have a look at speedplay pedals they are road pedals but have dual sided entry.0

But the hardest thing in the world to walk in!
They did do some MTB cleats (frogs?), but to be honest, you're best off going for either SPDs or Crank Bros with a mountain bike type shoe.
The cleats aren't really recessed, but there's enough 'tread' on the shoe and the cleats are small enough so they're not in contact with the floor when you walk.0 -
I'm thinking along lines of something like these
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-r10-road-cycling-shoe/
dhb R1.0 Road Cycling Shoe £45
◦Cleats - 3 Bolt Look Type what tyope pedal would I need and can I walk short distance in them?
Or would I be better off with the MTB type
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-m10-mountai ... ling-shoe/ 2 bolt cleat sdps or even the commuter ones
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-c10-commute ... ling-shoe/
I know its down to use etc but I was wanting the road ones as seems most popular and highest reviews
Thanks0 -
Do not worry about opting for MTB shoes and pedals. They will not make you slower!0

With those dhb shoes you can fit any type of road pedal cleat to them. For example the yellow shimano spd sl cleat which allows for a small amount of float between the cleat and the pedal, this shimano cleat would then fit any shimano road pedal from the bottom ones (r540) to the top of the range dura ace. Each pedal manufacturer usually has their own type of cleat. Do you follow?0 -
My reading of tons of reviews on clipless pedals seem to lead me to 1 simple conclusion.
Ratio of time your foot spend on the pedal: time your foot spend out of the pedal
The higher this ratio is, the more beneficial SPD-SL is :P .0 -
With SPD there is also the option of multi release cleats. This will unclip if you pull pretty much in any direction other than up. It gives a more natural un-clipping action. I have never stayed clipped in when I needed to clip out, I have had a few issues of unclipping accidentally, but only on the MTB and only when jumping. So not really an issue for road cycling.
Lidl and Sports Direct do cheap SPD shoes, but sometimes the cheap shoes have very thin base plates which need upgrading via a new cleat plate. Otherwise the threads can strip on the screws.0
