Bike floor stand

I don't mean a work stand, but one to keep my bike upright without falling over - like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=28173

I need something to prop my bike up whilst I wash it - my only options at the moment are to wash it lying down (clearly ridiculous) or to pop it up against a nearby wall. Unfortunately this is the side of my neighbours house and, as I have only just moved, I don't think it would be too neighbourly to spray water and mud all over their house

It needs to be sturdy enough to be able to hose the bike off and wash it properly (and preferebly cheap too). The one above looks ok but some of the comments are not too great....

Any suggestions for easy DIY versions would also be great!!

I use one of these . But, I have extended the legs with bigger tubes to give it much more stability.

What's wrong with lying the bike on the ground to wash it? I do that to hose/scrub off the worst of the mud then turn it upside down to wash it with soapy stuff but you need to be careful about getting muck in the headset and steerer.

Mine has pannier racks, which aren't really up to having the bike laid on them really.

I find that because I can't get around 360 degrees I end up wasting time spraying mud from one side of the bike to the other! Not good

Do one side with hose brush attachment thing then flip it over to do t'other then upside down for spray cleaner and scrub before final hose down, works for me.

What's your budget? I've got a stand from halfords for £10 that holds the rear wheel of the ground that I use for cleaning the bike, but I'm also getting a workstand from ebay for £40ish http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOME-MECHANIC ... 230d2a53af

Hmmm, I was thinking as cheaply as possible but that Ebay one actually looks quite good!! I bought my ex a nice expensive workstand as a pressie years ago but obviously I no longer have the use of that :(

Might add that to my christmas list :D

To be honest, that looks a little flimsy
If you could go £20 more, then check this out.
Very popular, probably owned by most of the peeps on this forum, too. Mine is 7 years old, and still looks as good as the day I bought it

Why is lying down to wash your bike 'clearly ridiculous'?... At least you could see that the BB was cleaned properly.
Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!
  • The Ebay model is virtually exactly the same as the Lidl one that pops up for £30. Its a lot better built than it looks and more than adequate for general maintenance and washing. I wouldnt recommend it if you do a lot of repairs as the clamp arm is pretty poor, but for what you want, it will do the job perfectly.

I have one of these and they are superb. Could not recommend them enough. They are definitely not flimsy and have a decent amount of adjustments and a magnetic tool tray for bits. Really good value for money.

Ok, let me rephrase that, the way it seems to go when I do it is clearly ridiculous. I just end up spreading the mud around - for me, it doesn't work!

Thanks for the comments on the EBay stand - think ill give it a go. I'm not into loads of mechanics so it should be just the job for washing and tweaking the odd bits and bobs.

    Cheers!

I think your first link is about as good as you can get on a budget. Should keep the bikes stable enough for you to wash it, surely?

if you don't mind spending a a bit more take a look at the "andy stand". But that costs as much as some of the proper bike work stands from ebay.

for what its worth. I have the same stand as hopper1 and its very good. it folds down when not in use so you might be able to tuck it away somewhere when not in use.

  • Hi,

In similiar boat myself, i have a good quality work stand for maintanence jobs, and a small stand for washing, http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/raleigh- ... 27233.html

I find the small stand awkrard as have 3 different bikes, with stand often falling over if not perfectly flat.

At this years Dusk till Dawn at thetford, there was a manafacturer selling small tripod stands that sat under bottom bracket, retailed at around £30......wish i had purchased one...........

Oh they also folded up. Does any body anything about these, tryed google but not showing up...........
