Find me a bike, please

Hi all, I'm looking for a winter project, maybe a fixie, something I can abuse over winter. I would like an old cheap jack to strip down and rebuild over Xmas. I don't really know what I'm looking for, can somebody find me a frame or bike on eBay. I'm 6 ft tall.

I want this to a project that I can cut my teeth on with regards to stripping and building a bike

obviously all frames can be converted to a fixie then?
parts are still available for a 30 year old frame?


and i know all this from the wealth of help provided on this forum, if only somebody would suggest a suitable frame, to help somebody who wants to learn about bike maintenance get started.
if only i had posted this in the Road buying advice section!!!!! oh hold on, i did.

surely by nature of the header, any body posting in here needs help!

Instead of throwing your toys out of your pram, just have a think about your original post. You would have got a better response and bags of help if you'd written this:

Basically you asked people to look on eBay for you. TBH that does smack of laziness.

Anyway ideally what you want is a 22"-23" seat tube steel frame, built from some sort of Reynolds or Columbus tubing. Would be perfect if the frame had track drop outs. If not you want a drop out like this

This means you do have some leeway to pull the rear wheel back to get the correct chain tension. Obviously you need a fixed wheel as well.

With regards to the frame. Can I buy any old racer of eBay and convert it to fixie? And do I need a special rear wheel

You only need a single chainring. But what you need to do is look at what gear ratio you want to ride with, as you'll probably need to buy a new chainring to match with the rear cog on that wheel to achieve your desired gear in inches .

When I was a lad 69" was the preferred ratio for fixed.

Changing the stem and bars is up to you. But it depends if the stem that comes with the bike are the right length for you

Create chainset &BB
Create wheelset with flip-flop singlespeed/fixie hub ( rear needs truing) Come with tubes & tyres ( showing signs of wear)
Aero bars and brake levers + cables
Chain tensioner

Was going to build up a bike for winter but went for cheap Tiagra groupset instead

You can have the lot for £35 posted or £25 collected from S. Derbys if interested
