I was all set to get the defy composite2 but i keep reading such good things about the defy 1, im now not sure.
Is the carbon plus apex spec worth £400 more than the alu/ 105 of the defy1.Plus i really like white bikes and the defy is white.
The use would be general road riding and a sportif or two.
Any info either way would be helpful.
cheers.

well apex isn't as good as 105 for starters, so it how much carbon is worth to you?

  • I'm hardly an expert, but FWIW, I test rode a Defy 3 Composite 2012 against a Defy 1 2013.

The Defy 3 Comp 2012 has a Tiagra groupset, whereas the Defy 1 was 105, iirc.

I couldn't really tell much difference between the groupsets, but the Defy 3 Comp seemed quite a bit sharper, more positive, just more pleasant to control.

I got the Defy 3 Comp in the end.

They were, however, the same price, since the 2012 model was discounted from 1249 to 999, so the decision was maybe a bit more obvious than yours is.

  • Just to muddy the water a bit... if a size L would be any good for you, there's also this if your budget stretches to 1500 or so...

  • As above.. you can pick up an ultegra spec 2012 defy comp 1 on the inet for 1499 in most sizes.. i had the exact same dilemma and i went for the defy comp 1... so glad i did. no regrets! :D

re: 105 vs Apex, I've always liked the SRAM Rival on my Roubaix, and had 105 on another bike which I've since sold. Have built up a new bike with SRAM Apex and I have to say it performs really well compared with Rival. Although "entry level" I've seen Apex compared to 105 (with Rival seemingly comparable with Ultegra). I think groupsets are down to personal preference, none of them are bad by any stretch of the imagination, but Im sure a Defy Composite with Apex would be great.

thanks for replies and it seems carbon is edging it which is a surprise..I really expected to read that the defy 1 would be the one to go for.Interesting.
