I got the nerves removed from a tooth yesterday and the dentist put a temporary plug into the hole with some cotton wool type material with an antibiotic, but a while ago the plug came out, will this be okay until i go back in two week to get a cap fitted?

    I'm no dentist...

But without the plug protecting and securing the hole / antibiotic, you're probably running a higher risk of infection.

Phone your dentist and ask the receptionist's advice? You shouldn't incur any charge for a repair on dental work that's just been carried out and failed.

  • My girflriend just had the first part of her root canal treatment done and the wad they put in fell out. She had to go back a couple of days later and have a new one put in. So call the dentist.

If you want a serious infection, just leave it as it is. Over the next two weeks you'll repeatedly fill the cavity with various foodstuffs, and leave it to decompose in it's own bacterial soup. Since you have no nerves in there to warn you about the developing situation, you'll not realise anything's wrong until you've developed a fair sized abscess. Possibly.

Or you could just pop back to the dentist.

(I'm not a dentist, nor do I ride a Cervelo, but I do have rubbish teeth so have a lot of experience of dentistry)

Buy yourself a tube of araldite, the stuff that you have to mix two together for it to work. Plug it up with that.

    This.

Have had the roots drilled out of quite a lot of teeth (for reasons directly related to cycling...), and getting food down the resultant hole is a surefire way to a nasty infection. Go see the dentist.

    I ride a BMC.

You are kidding right? Ask the receptionist's advice? I think I'd ask her to put me through to the dentist if I was seeking advice about my teeth and his dental work... and yes, that's the face I'd pull for him to inspect, probably shortly followed by this :o , then this  , which I feel sure would probably lead to this  , this :? And finally this

    Good luck.

Depends on which dentist you go to, at mine the receptionist is the owner and ex dentist, she has spent many years pulling teeth out!

Oh and to the OP, i also would phone them in the morning to get advice rather than post on a Bike Radar < Road < Road General section of a forum

You really wouldnt listen to a bunch of virtual keyboard people would you?

Phone the dentist but meantime use hot salt water mouth washes regularly to keep it clean. Lots of salt and as hot as you can stand.

I've seen what happens when you don't keep it clean, thankfully it wasn't me but, trust me, she looked like a hamster which had just filled its pouches.

Basically, there is nothing to be gained by not calling the dentist asap but a hell of a lot to be lost by not calling the dentist asap. Whether at 2:30 or any other time!

    Call the dentist!
