In-line headphone amp

The volume on my S3 is rubbish, it could be louder. It's plenty loud enough with the supplied inear headphones, but I can't stand inear headphones and have some nice Sennheisers instead. The sound quality on the S3 is very good but needs an extract +3db particuarly on older tracks before loudness wars and heavy compression, in which case I'm perfectly happy to turn it down.

Anyway anyone have any experience or recommendation for inline battery powered amps to boost things up a little?

I have not tried them but posters on the What HiFi site swear by them.
I am happy with my small Sennheisers on my phone but my Grados were pathetic till I plugged them into the amp at home :P so I can see where an in-line amp would be useful.

Samsung have probably just limited the volume in order to safeguard your hearing. Most MP£ players do the same, but at least have an option to allow you to change it. There are apps you can download that de-restrict the volume.

Yes agreed, the limit is there for a reason. Unfortunately it's a limit paired to the in ear headphones supplied with the phone, which are either highly sensitive or just louder because they are in ear.as I said above I cannot stand in ear and use some nice light weight half cup headphone for out and about and they are not loud enough unless the mp3 is limited and compressed to make it sound louder, older tracks just don't cut it. Particular on the train and also watching a film on my iPad2 on a plane was really hard and I ended up putting sub titles on.

I tried a couple of apps before deciding to try the hardware route but while they boost the volume they distort louder stuff as the interal amp cannot handle it, fair play goes to Samsung for not allowing the amp to be overloaded and as said above quality is excellent.

Anyway ordered one of theo FiiO 6 in the link above will report back when it arrives.

Means I'm not contimnually changing volume, and boosts quiet stuff.

At default 89db, you hardly ever get clipping or distortion with it.

The Fiio recommended above is brilliant. I use an E7 to drive some Beyer DT770s. Fantastic piece of kit.

I use a fiio amp with a dock connector with my ipod nano if I use it with my bose headphones as they need more power to drive them, the headphones are fine on my iphone though.

Damn you, I ended up buying some earphones because of that site and a stonking review of some sony ones that are going for a bargain for the sound quality they have.
I did put some inner ear sennheisers through the washing machine and the don't sound that same, clipping on some tracks so that's my excuse.
