Semi-Integrated Headset

Hey guys,
I am after a semi-integrated headset.
I bought a Superstars one before and after 6 months it was shot, bearings all rusty etc, so I have taken that out and I need to buy a new one.
I'd rather not spend the earth, I do like the KCNC ones but there 75 notes, would like sommat half that price ideally.
Can anyone suggest a quality semi-integrated headset without it costing the earth ?
Cheers

Why not just get new bearings?
Perhaps service it every so often too in future?0 -
Because the rust had eaten into the cups and they wasn't as smooth anymore.
I shouldn't have to service and replace every 6 months.0 -
Makes no difference. All they do is hold the bearings in place.
And I dought the cups are actually that bad."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

True you shouldn't service every 6 months - every month or after filthy ride is a good idea. Or just check them.0

Take my forks out after every other ride!
Cos I got new forks going in and I spotted rusted cups and bearings and not wanting to have to mess about again I just wanted to replace all new stuff now and get thru winter trouble free.0 -
You don't have to take the forks out completely to check them. But is worth doing if gunk is getting in.0

unless you got a really cheap and nasty headset."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

The bearing cases were all rust, they have ground into the cups and made a mess, I thought it was just dirt at first and it isn't.
The headset was a 24.99 superstars one and it's let so much water in and rusted up I think it's crap quality, when I changed my original headset after a year it wasn't as bad as this, clearly I'm not just gonna bang some new bearings in there with a new set if forks going in.
I just don't know what's a good headset to get for the money, 40 quid is about most I wanna spend.0 -
All headsets need servicing and some grease from time to time. Btw, mines still on original bearings and is 7 years old.
Finally seen the light and getting some bouncy forks?0 -
If you must get a new one, try this:
http://www.pedalon.co.uk/acatalog/ahead ... stack.html
I use the Superstar Uno, no problems with it at all.0 -
I have the superstar headset zero stack (same as you) and it works fine, its been in for a year and no problems yet (bar a silly installation error on my part). I'd try replacing the bearings first, unless the cups really are that badly damaged.0
-
If the cups really are knackered then replace with another one but grease it and service it more regularly, I've got the same SSC headset and it's good but still gets muck in it. Pretty sure all headsets will be Llow grot in.0

Thanks for the link sonic.
OK one more question, what kinda grease do you guys recommend that I use for the headset? And could I use the same grease for other parts on the bike.0 -
Non lithium, teflon fortified grease, Halfords sell it reasonably cheap.0
-
Lovely thanks Sonic I'll head off down there today to get some0

if its a standard, straight, 1 1/8th at both ends job, then I have two of
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ritchey-WCS-S ... 20c477f06b
and they're both now some years old and still turning fine, with very little (i.e. no) maintenance on the bearings.0 -
Thanks Monk I literally just bought one online 2 minutes ago, sods law lol.
Cheers anyway mate0
