Hi everyone ,as it states in the title are people feeling the pinch or becoming very choosy how they spend? I'm asking this question because I've been trying to sell what I would describe as a desirable road bike with little luck .I know about second hand values and about depreciation etc , but whats caught me out is how much people are willing to pay .A year or so ago the same age frame alone that I'm selling would've been worth more second hand than the offers Ive received for the complete bike ( s works Tarmac sl3 ) so do people expect something for nothing or have I got what I value my bike wrong , cheers p

  • Obvious point is the time of year. Not many people are looking to splash out on a nice bike like that at this time of year, when the weather is cr@p and few hours of daylight outside the weekend.

Wait til the spring and you'll easily get 20-40% more for it than now.

People of avg income are saving money for Christmas, wealthy people didn't get wealthy paying what people ask. Best time to buy IMO.

Strip it down to sell it or keep it because you'll never get what you want. I'm keeping my frames from now on, I'd rather have a garage full of frames than give them away.

IME something will always sell at the right price - thing is the right price for the buyer and the seller are generally two different things.

I have noticed over the last 6 months particularly people asking silly amounts for items. Just because something is described as 'like new' they expect to get nearly as new money for it - as a buyer this does not compute as I may as well get a really new one and all the warranty etc that goes with it.

So I suspect you are being too ambitious with your asking price (regardless of how you dress it up).

Also people seem to neglect that often they ask more for something than they can be had for online new, which I never understand.

Time of year, people have juts bought 2012 bikes and secondly the market now has more used items due to the influx of new people who then upgrade etc. As someone mentioned before though values change it is only worth what someone will pay

  • Ask for 60% of the cheapest price you can find the item new for online ... Or at worst 50% rrp ...

Or in layman's terms ... Stop being greedy ...

Rather than judge can I ask what it is exactly your selling and how much your asking. Once I know this ill make my opinion?

    Thanks

I think a little bit of the shine has gone off the tarmac. Other people have caught up a bit on frames (or possibly even overtaken them) Spesh are still trying to charge premium prices though or sell the complete bikes with poorer components than other makers. The basic tarmac now comes with Sora!
  • In general i try to get a bargain where i can, but for me it is always about getting the 'right' product that i know will be just what i want & i will get plenty of use from & i can rely on it to do it's job & perform. For that reason i will pays the money, even if it aint no bargain.

As far as the classifieds go, i have sold some stuff & yes, folk do tend to try to drive the price down. It's just how it is on here. Never tried buying owt on here though, i just don't like buying stuff that's been used. Jeez, i'm such a fussy git.
  • Hi , the bike in question is a 2011 specialized s works tarmac sl3 with dura ace 7900 groupset ( 7800 ) crank ,mavic kysrium elite wheels and 3T components , its in excellent condition and i would be happy to get around £1650 ish for it , some offers ive recieved have been as low as £1100 . Am i being greedy? ,bearing in mind that when it was new 18 months ago it cost nearly £5000 to build

if I was buying a bik I would have paid £1650 without question (obviously condition dependant) - I would have paid up to £2,500 if it was all looking pristine - but me like most are hard up and Christmas is comming - I would just hold fire - or put it up on fleabay with a £1,800 reserve (to cover costs).
  • It was On eBay last week starting at £1600 not one bid , there's a 54cm s works on there now 2 days to go £2020 ok so slightly diff spec but i still can't believe mine didn't go and I can't believe people think an offer of £1100 is acceptable
  • That is a bargain at £1600, I'd snap it up if it was my size and if I was in the market for one. Surprised you didn't get any bids on eBay, but you have to remember, as the price of the bike goes up, the potential market gets smaller and smaller. It's easy to shift an Allez any time of year, but your market is a lot smaller and a lot more prone to seasonal shyness.

And don't let the ridiculous offers discourage you. I sold an old Allez Sport I had sitting round on eBay for £480 in the summer, but had offers as low as £250 whilst the auction was going. When I politely declined this offer, saying 'That's a little bit short of what I was hoping to get for it' he came back with an offer of... £260! Most people are out for a bargain but eventually you'll find a serious buyer who's willing to pay what it's worth.

Mothball it until the spring and you should get 2grand for it.
  • I don't agree with any of the above. Like anything an item is only worth what someone will pay for it - that's just market forces for you. Maybe there will be more buyers in the spring but you can't blame the market if things don't go your way.

I really don't think your being greedy at all. Someone would be willing to pay the same money for far less spec bike out there so stick to your price and it will sell. If not then keep it. Don't give it away. And tbh I think it's too cheap. I would accept less than £2k....
