I'm doing up my early 90's Raleigh Peak and need to replace the original RD- M550 rear derailleur and would like to know what modern day equivalent would best replace it. It was a 7 speed.

Thanks in advance.

Anything up to 9 speed. I would suggest (given the age) an Alivio is probably all you need. The direct equivalent for a current model would be SLX 9 speed.

Any Shimano rear will work except 10 speed. Depends on your budget. Modern equivalent of LX is probably SLX, but a new Deore (and probably Alivio) will be better than an old LX. Although my old Mountain Exage from the 80's is still holding up and shifting nicely.
