Looking at several tyre options for the winter weather and came across foldable tyres.

What's the difference between foldable and non foldable?

  • Solid rim bead vs kevlar rim bead - basically you cannot fold a non-foldable tyre.

It is as simple as that.
  • They are also lighter.
    All other things being equal.

  • So foldable are the way forward. Thanks.

What he said. Unless you are carrying a tyre with you, the folding element is unimportant. I use a wire beaded tyre myself (Gatorskin) for financial reasons, but the difference in relative terms is proportionally quite considerable; the stated weight of a folding 23mm Gatorskin is 60g lighter than the equivalent with a wire bead.
