Apex Brake Performance

I have a Focus Cayo 1 which I really enjoy with thye exception of the brakes. They are SRAM Apex with Force levers. When riding on the hoods I find the brakes quite poor. I have a FS-MTB with Elixir and a Hybrid with Single Digit 7 Brakes and I know that in comparison these wont be as good - but I feel that if a car pulls out with these I'll have no chance of stooping.

Different pads / Setup / upgrade to Force? All ideas welcome!

  • I have the same brakes (and Apex shifters). Have to say I have no problem with them.

They are never going to be as good as hydraulic disc brake. But with proper set up they should be fine.

Have you tried re adjusting them as per SRAM instructions?

Close to rim as possible, levers adjusted for hand size etc?

mtbboy - thanks for the reply. I have adjusted them, the pads are aligned and it feels like the pad compound is just very hard!

I've got apex and find them great but I put Swisstop green pads on, I didn't bother with the stock pads.

Just as an update several months on (I wasn't riding as I had an injury) I have installed green swissstop and they are leagues better!
