Tagging on.

Minding my own today on my ride and finished a stretch across the beach front in which you turn back on yourself once you get to the end of the road as the next road Its parallel to the one I've just finished.
Anyway a group of four roadies caught up to me at the lights said hello and I tagged on to the back of the group as I was heading that way.
There was a couple of times early on in which it didn't feel like I was pushing myself as much as normal but I think that was some of the wind resistance of riding behind 4 riders. I thought it'd be rude to overtake and I wasn't convinced I would have had enough pace to stay ahead or alternatively they would have only stepped it up and spat me out the back.
So I followed for about 5 miles and averaged about 20-21 mph so decent pace. I dropped back slightly and once I was off the wheel I couldn't make the ground back up!
So if it was you riding from west kirby to Moreton thanks for letting me tag on and giving me signals like I was part of your group! Very welcoming.
I will have to join a club as riding solo is no way as much fun!!!

Do your turn on the front next time0

See I find this sort of thing so difficult esp if there is more than one rider, do you have a turn up front, or just sit quietly at the back, well done tho nice story.
You should have waited for a incline pulled out the the side and sprinted to the point of having a chest grabber then with both arms outstretched shouted yes!!!!!
Then pulled off somewhere to finish said chest grabber!!One plays football, tennis or golf, one does not play at cycling0 -
Sound like a friendly bunch. Somewhat something which lacks on this side of the land.0

Actually dropping off a bunch and then chasing back on is pretty good training.
Last road ride I did in October, back light fell off... I was going to say stuff it but someone turned back to pick it up.. so , did the same..found the light. but getting back onto the bunch on an undulating bit was almost 'fun' and was a good 8/10 minutes at near as dammit threshold.0 -
If they were that welcoming I think I may have offered to do my turn in the wind.0

Thought that may have been a bit cheeky but to be fair don't even think they changed who was up front in the 5 miles or so I was with them.
I don't understand why anyone wouldn't be friendly in this situation as surely we all go out for the same reason? The love of it and the fitness/health benefits.
Decent group maybe next time ill offer a turn up front0 -
It's good to hear about people having nice experiences when they're out and about. I'd love to ride in a group but I'm not really sure of the etiquette and I've got a fixed wheel at the moment and only average about 17mph when I'm out by myself. What sort of average do you normally ride at Graeme? Would be interesting to see if you were much faster in a group.0

Sorry for the beginner question in the general road forum - didn't seem like it warranted a thread of its own.Is the gorilla tired yet?0 -
When the pros do it they peel off but as people are saying he should have done his turn I imagine there must be a way where people overtake as well0

I wouldn't roll up next to a group and start doing this, unless they've welcomed you.0 -
I always say hello to other cyclists, I think I get it from riding a motorbike. I agree though there are loads of times I have cut a ride short when if I was with someone I would normaly do another 10 or so more miles.0

This happens all the time on the Wirral - lots of cyclists around here. If the guys on the front are happy there - leave them be. If they want someone to swap over with - then they'll move aside and you rotate places.
Its nice to thank them for their work though when you peel off.0 -
I'd get annoyed if someone slipstreamed me then tried to take the front...I'm training to the correct pace including wind resistance and I don't want some one messing it up. They could slipstream me all they like.0

Sounds like a good group of people. I'd be a bit nervous of taking a turn at the front in case my speed wasn't as quick as they liked, especially with a group of friends (I'm used to trailing my mates wheel around the Wirral due to his expensive bike, not his better level of fitness cough cough). I have met enough friendly groups and I have seen a group who cycle Thursday night and maybe Saturday morning through West Kirby every week who one day I will ask more about.
Nothing like a bit of headwind down the prom stretch in Hoylake or New Brighton.0 -
