Oops... it seems I may have started something off that may mean i'll have to start commuting in the middle of the winter
My route will be from hendon (greyhound hill) and ending up in Muswell Hill. So a few hills to tackle each way
I will have to cycle in ALL conditions so that rules out a road bike as I need a bike that can take 35/38 winter snow tyres.
I'm torn between getting a hybrid or a CX, although am leaning towards a CX as i think i'll get more use out of it.
My budget for the bike is £800 max but could stretch a little for the right one. I am leaning towards disc brakes as the idea of commuting in rush hour with heavy rain/snow with rim brakes fills me with dread.
Any suggestions??
I've seem the Jamis Nova at Evans pus the boardman Hybrid range at Halfords and am totally confused. Evans also have a 2012 tricross disc for £750!!!

How about a 2012 Charge Filter Hi?
Currently on sale from Wiggle for £700.
I have a Filter Mid and is a great commuter bike. Comfortable and nice to ride. The Hi is the same frame but with disc brakes and a Tiagra group set.“Life has been unfaithful
And it all promised so so much”

I was in the same boat recently and considered hybrids (though not seriously - I wanted drop bars), CX bikes and light tourers. In the end I went for a tourer, specifically this:

Over budget but there are cheaper alternatives. It's perfect for commuting: strong, capable of load lugging, a good spread of gears, a good riding position and it's surprisingly quick. Full guards and 35mm Marathon Winters isn't a problem either.

I've managed to sort out my BB5s and you know what? They're not bad at all... stop the bike really well no matter the conditions (takes some sorting and are noisy until they bed in)Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

Just a thought, you're planning your purchase around extreme adverse weather which we have down south for what, no more than 10 days a year. What about the remaining 355? Surely it's better to plan around the majority?0 -
